2 St Dominic & The RosaryThe origin of the Rosary, according to tradition, began in 1214 when the Blessed Virgin Mary gave St Dominic the Rosary prayer. St Dominic was asked by Mary to preach the Rosary in order to safe guard people against evil and sin.
3 Many years later, in October 1571, a Christian fleet went into battle at Lepanto. Pope Pius V, himself a Dominican, had called on all Christians to join in praying the Rosary as the army of the Holy League went into battle. They won the battle and freed 15,000 Christian slaves. They attributed their victory to Mary and the praying of the Rosary. The anniversary of this day became known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the month of October was dedicated to the praying of the Rosary.
