New Jersey Devils zpět na obsah The New Jersey Devils are a professional ice hockey team based in East Rutherford, New Jersey. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Devils have won the Stanley Cup three times, first in the lockout- shortened 1995 season. The club was founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1974, moved to Denver, Colorado after only two seasons, then settled in New Jersey in 1982. Under current general manager Lou Lamoriello, the Devils have earned a playoff spot in each of the last nine seasons. Since their move to New Jersey, the Devils have played their home games at the Continental Airlines Arena. In 2007, the team is expected to move to a new arena under construction in the city of Newark. They have rivalries with their trans-Hudson neighbor, the New York Rangers, and with the Philadelphia Flyers, as either the Devils or Flyers have won the Atlantic Division title every season since 1995.

New York Islanders zpět na obsah The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in Uniondale, New York. They play in the Atlantic Division of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Islanders began play in 1972 and rapidly developed a dominant team that won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships in the early 1980s. Since that time, the Islanders have struggled to contend for the Stanley Cup, suffering a lengthy playoff drought followed by several quick exits from the NHL playoffs.

New York Rangers zpět na obsah The New York Rangers (NYR) are a professional ice hockey team based in New York City, New York, USA. They play in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Rangers and their local rivals, the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils, are all members of the NHL's Atlantic Division, guaranteeing plenty of regular season meetings. This is unique among New York City's major league sports teams; Major League Baseball's New York Yankees and New York Mets are in different leagues although they play more now due to interleague competition, and the National Football League's New York Jets and New York Giants are in different conferences, giving them little opportunity to play each other. This allows the Rangers to maintain a great rivalry between NYC area teams.

Philadelphia Flyers zpět na obsah The city of Philadelphia had been home to an NHL team before for one season; the Philadelphia Quakers during the 1930-31 NHL season. They suspended operations for the next and subsequent seasons until they finally cancelled the franchise in 1936. Philadelphia would have to wait another 30 years for the NHL to return when in 1966, the league awarded an expansion franchise to the city. Flyers was the name chosen for the new franchise as it conveyed the motion and excitement that was to be consistent with both hockey in general, as well as the new Philadelphia club. With this idea in mind the now familiar stylized P containing an orange hockey puck with four wings coming off the back was chosen to be the team's logo.

Pittsburgh Penguins zpět na obsah The Pittsburgh Penguins is a professional ice hockey team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They began play in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a 1967 expansion team. The home of the early NHL incarnation of the Pirates during the 1920s and the successful Hornets American Hockey League franchise from the 1930s through the 1960s, Pittsburgh was one of six cities (the other five were Los Angeles and Oakland, California, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Minneapolis) which were awarded an expansion team when the NHL doubled in size for the start of 1967-68

Boston Bruins zpět na obsah The Boston Bruins are a professional ice hockey team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They play in the National Hockey League (NHL). In 1924, at the convincing of Boston grocery magnate Charles Adams, the National Hockey League decided to expand into the United States. As a long-time hockey hotbed, Boston was a natural choice for the NHL's first American team. Adams hired Art Ross as general manager. Unfortunately, World War II decimated the Bruins worse than most teams.

Buffalo Sabres zpět na obsah The Buffalo Sabres are a professional ice hockey team based in Buffalo, New York. They began playing in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a 1970 expansion team. The Buffalo Sabres, along with the Vancouver Canucks, joined the NHL in the 1970-71 season. The Sabres' first owners were Seymour and Northrop Knox, scions of a family long prominent in Western New York. In 1989, following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the top young Soviet player to defect to the NHL was Alexander Mogilny, who signed with the Sabres.

Montreal Canadiens zpět na obsah The Montreal Canadiens are the oldest established National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the Canadiens are one of the NHL's 'Original Six' franchises. The team has won twenty-four Stanley Cups, the most championships by any team in the NHL. The Montreal Canadiens play their home games at the Bell Centre, previously named Molson Centre. They played their home games in Jubilee Rink, Montreal Westmount Arena, Mount Royal Arena and the Montreal Forum before that.

Ottawa Senators zpět na obsah The Ottawa Senators is a professional ice hockey team in the NHL based in Ottawa, Ontario. They began playing in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a 1992 expansion team. They are the only major league team in the Canadian capital. The Senators won their first playoff series in 1997-98, defeating the New Jersey Devils in six games. Despite defeating the heavily favoured Devils in the opening round, the Senators' lack of depth and experience was easily exposed in the second round against the team that became that season's Stanley Cup runner-up, the Washington Capitals, who quickly disposed of the Sens in five mostly one-sided games.

zpět na obsah Evgeni Malkinzpět na obsah The 6 foot 3 inch, 195 pound center was drafted 2nd overall (behind Alexander Ovechkin) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. On August 7, 2006, it appeared that the 20-year-old Russian player had come to a compromise and signed a dealwith Metallurg Magnitogorsk that would have kept him in Russia until May 2007.

Jaromír Jágr zpět na obsah Jagr currently plays with the New York Rangers. He still resides in the Czech Republic during the off-season. His father, also named Jaromír Jágr, is prosperous and owns a chain of hotels. The younger Jagr began skating at age three. At the age of 16, he was playing at the highest level of competition in Czechoslovakia.

Sidney Crosby zpět na obsah Sidney Patrick Crosby born August 7, 1987 in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia is a professional ice hockey player for the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. He was the first pick of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and one of the leading scorers during the 2005-06 NHL season finishing 6th in scoring with 102 points (39 G, 63 A). Crosby was one of the most highly regarded draft picks in modern hockey, leading many to refer to the 2005 Draft as the Sidney Crosby Lottery.

zpět na obsah Stanley Cupzpět na obsah The Stanley Cup It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association.
