1 The Connecticut Colony Founded in 1633-1636 Founded by Sir Andros By: Hannah, Audrey, and Noah

2 CONNECTICUT’S FIRST PEOPLE The first people in Connecticut were Native Americans. Several Algonquian Tribes such as the Pequot, Podunk, and Mohegan lived in Connecticut. They used spears made of wood, rock and bone to hunt animals. They hunted, fished and farmed, and picked corn. Enemy tribes such as the Pequot were not peaceful. (only ones)

3 EARLY SETTLERS Connecticut's borders were set up in 1733. At that time the capital changed between New Haven and Hartford. In the winter the journey to Connecticut was difficult for the colonists. Connecticut was named the constitution state.

4 EARLY SETTLERS The fundamental orders was the first constitution written in North America. Connecticut's colonists were proud to take part in their Government.

5 LIFE IN THE COLONY Most Connecticut colonist lived and worked on farms. During the Pequot War English settlers destroyed entire Pequot villages. The first colonist in Connecticut faced many difficulties. A lot of families depended on farming.

6 LIFE IN THE COLONY Everybody had their own work to do. The men took care of the farms while the women took care of the homes. Children helped parents with daily chores. Connecticut’s people planted beans, pumpkin, and corn. The colonist picked wild blueberries, nuts, and strawberries.

7 WORK AND TRADE Tinsmiths pounded and shaped tin into many useful items. Blacksmiths learned their skills as apprentices. Connecticut's settlements grew into towns and big cities. Shops were opened by Blacksmiths, Wagon Makers, and Shoemakers.

8 WORK AND TRADE Sawmills cut logs into lumbar. Apprentices usually worked for seven years. Some colonist kept slaves.

9 EXPORTS The agricultural exports were dried meat. The industrial exports were flour, iron, and rum. The natural resource exports were Fish and seafood

10 RELIGION AND COMMUNITY A lot of people in Connecticut were Puritans. Learning was important in Connecticut. Most people went to church on Sunday. In 1650 Connecticut made a law about education. The law was towns with 50 families or more had to have schools. Most people followed Bible.

11 RELIGION AND COMMUNITY Church leaders ran the government. People in Connecticut led a government they set up. In 1662 the king granted Connecticut a charter. In 1682 the king of England wanted all of new England to be one whole colony.

12 BECOMING A STATE –Britain taxed Connecticut. –They taxed paper, sugar, and tea. –One of the first colonies to demand independence. –In 1777 sent representatives to the continental congress. – Connecticut was founded as a colony in 1633 – 1636.

13 STATEHOOD Connecticut gained statehood January 9, 1788. In 1788 Connecticut was the fifth state to join the united states.

14 Facts Tomas Hooker founded Connecticut. Some of the first settlements are Windsor, Wethersfield, and Hartford. The Mohegan word Quinnehtukquit means “Beside the Long Tidal River.” Connecticut was named after this Mohegan word.
