Physical Science Unit 4, Chapter 1, Lesson 1 Forces
Use the “Force” Physical Science Unit 4, Chapter 1, Lesson 1 Forces

How to use “The Force”

What is Force? Force- A push or a pull that changes the motion, size, or shape of a body Examples: Buoyant force Compression Force Elastic Force Shearing force Tensile force

Forces-Two of a Kind? Contact force Noncontact force

Contact Forces Contact Forces require contact between two objects or substances. Buoyant Force- the upward force that keeps things floating in a liquid Video

Contact Forces Elastic Force- the force that acts to pull a stretched object back to it’s regular shape

Contact Forces Friction- the force that resists motion in two objects that are moving against each other Friction Song!

Contact Forces Compression Force- a force that results from pushing or squeezing an object

Contact Force Tensile Force- the force that results from a pull exerted on an object Video

Contact Force Shearing Force- the force that distorts material by slippage along a plane parallel to the force Video

Noncontact Force Noncontact forces are forces that do not require contact Examples: Gravitational Force Electromagnetic Force Weak nuclear force Strong nuclear force

Noncontact Forces Gravitational force- the force that holds/returns an object to the proximity of that object Video

Noncontact forces Electromagnetic force- electric and magnetic forces coupled in one term for you! Stronger than gravitational force Determines the ways in which electrically charged particles interact with each other Gravity vs electromagnetism

Noncontact Forces Weak nuclear force- the force within the atomic nucleus that is responsible for certain types of radioactivity Strong nuclear force- the force that works on the protons and the neutrons of an atom

Quiz Be able to identify types of contact forces at work.
Be able to give me an example of each of the contact forces
