THE BOOK OF ACTS

ACTS VERSES 1—11 FOCUSES ON JESUS FROM RESURRECTION TO ASCENSION
VERSES 12—26 FOCUSES ON A REPLACEMENT FOR JUDAS Previous Slide Next Slide

RESURRECTION TO ASCENSION
ACTS JESUS FROM RESURRECTION TO ASCENSION Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V1. The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Luke is referring to His letter he wrote prior to this one, which is called the Gospel of Luke. O Theophilus see the intro to the Book of Acts. Luke is writing about the miracles and teaching that Jesus had done before and after His Crucifixion. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V2. until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, Luke talks about the miracles and teaching until Jesus’ ascension. After Jesus’ ascension He worked through the Holy Spirit. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V3. to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. Here Luke is talking about the proof of Jesus’ hands and the wound in His side. Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God which means He was talking about the 3rd Heaven. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V4. And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; Here Luke is talking about the promise the Father made about sending the Holy Spirit (the comforter). He wanted them to stay in Jerusalem and wait on Holy Spirit. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V5. for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." Again Luke is talking about the promise the Father made about sending the Holy Spirit (the comforter). If they stayed in Jerusalem they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V6. Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" The disciples were thinking that this was going to happen during their time and there would be a king to overcome Rome. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V7. And He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. Again the disciples were thinking that this was going to happen during their time and there would be a king to overcome Rome. But Jesus tells them they are not privileged to know the time or season that He will restore the Kingdom. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V8. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Jesus brings everything back into perspective. Instead of receiving political power they are to receive spiritual power to witness to the ends of the earth and spread the good news. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS Jesus ascends to the 3rd Heaven.
V9. Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. Jesus ascends to the 3rd Heaven. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V10. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, Here the disciples were staring at Jesus’ ascension and two angels are standing next to them. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V11. who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.“ According to the Gospel of Luke chapter 24 the two angels are talking about Jesus coming back for His church on a cloud for the Rapture of the Saints. Previous Slide Next Slide

To recap the first eleven verses.
ACTS To recap the first eleven verses. Luke mentions: The ascension of Christ The 40 days He was on earth The Baptism with the Holy Spirit The empowerment for them to be witnesses Previous Slide Next Slide

A REPLACEMENT FOR JUDAS
ACTS A REPLACEMENT FOR JUDAS Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V12. Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey. Here the disciples are being obedient. The Lord told them to wait for the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V13. And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. You can see that they stayed together. They didn’t go off on their own. The assembly of the church has started in the upper room. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V14. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. These were people of prayer. They did what Jesus told them to do and didn’t just sit waiting on the Holy Spirit. They prayed with the women and Jesus’ family. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS The number of disciples in the upper room were 120.
V15. And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, The number of disciples in the upper room were 120. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V16. "Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; Here Peter is telling the disciples that the Old Testament scripture was fulfilled when Judas betrayed Jesus. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V17. for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.“ Peter continues his teaching about Judas and reminding everyone that he was one of the original 12 apostles picked by Jesus. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V18. (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. V19. And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20"For it is written in the Book of Psalms: 'Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it'; and, 'Let another take his office.' In Acts it says this man purchased a field and fell and his guts bursts out. Look at Matt. 27:5 it says that he (Judas) threw down the 30 pieces of silver and went and hanged himself. The chief priest took the silver and said it was not right to keep them because they were purchased with blood so he went and bought the potters field to bury strangers in and therefore was called Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood. Matthew tells us he hung himself and Luke tells us he fell and his guts burst out. Which was it? Both, apparently he hung himself and the rope broke and he fell and his guts burst out. What about the field? Luke tells us that Judas bought the field and Matthew tells us the priest bought the field. Both, if I give you some money to buy a cup of coffee, we both bought the coffee. It was Judas’ money but the priest picked it up and bought the field. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V21. "Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, V22. beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." These were men of action because of two things; prayer and the Word. They needed to replace Judas. Four things speak of the criteria for Judas’ replacement: They had to be with the disciples throughout Jesus’ ministry verse 21. They had to be a witness of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist. According to verse 22. They had to be a witness of the ascension according to v22. They had to be an eye witness to the resurrection of Jesus. According to verse 22. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V23. And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. According to verse 23 there were only two that met the requirements for apostleship. Some say that they should not have picked the 12th apostle, that they were being presumptuous. Some say that Paul was the 12th apostle. Was Paul an apostle? Yes, read his epistles “Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ”. Did Paul meet the requirements laid out in verses 21 and 22? No. In Acts chapter 2 it appears that the Holy Spirit recognized Mathias as the 12th apostle. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V24. And they prayed and said, "You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen V25. to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place." In verse 24 it says that God you know the hearts of all. 1 Samuel 17:7 says that God looks upon our heart. Its not so much the decision we have to make but the heart behind the decision. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS V26. And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Notice how they acted in verse 26, they cast their lots. In the Old Testament the casting in lots was a common practice. In Lev. 8 we have an outline of the priests and their garments. On their breastplates they had two stones “the Urim and the Thummim” and the priests would consult these two stones by casting them for a decision. Do we need to cast lots today? They cast lots before the descending of the Holy Spirit on them. Now we have the Holy Spirit to guide us. Previous Slide Next Slide

ACTS To Summarize Chapter 1 Luke mentions: The disciples were:
The ascension of Christ The 40 days He was on earth The Baptism with the Holy Spirit The empowerment for them to be witnesses The disciples were: men of obedience men of prayer men of the Scriptures men of action men of faith Previous Slide Next Slide
