Rounding whole numbers and decimals Creator: Jamin Jones Class CEP: 811 Date: October 29, 2012

Objectives You will be able to… 1.Understand place value up to the tenths and hundredths 2.Round numbers to the nearest tenth and hundredth Core standard:OBJ05CCMA07: Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. It is the common core curriculum standard for 5 th grade students.

Road Map Part One: Round numbers to the nearest tens Round numbers to the nearest hundreds Part Two: Identify tenths place Identify hundredths place Part Three: Round to the nearest tenths place

Key Vocabulary Round - To replace a number with a number that tells about how many. About - Around or close to.

Why do we round? 1.When we round, we change a number into another number that it is close to. 2. Rounding numbers is a good way to estimate about how much you have. Part 1

Rounding rule 0 2345768910 1 When rounding we have to decide if we are going to round up or down. Placement on a the number line can helps us see where to round. 5 is in the middle of 0 and 10.

Rounding rule 0 2345768910 1 5 and above give it a shove.

Why do we round? 0 2345768910 1 4 or below leave it alone.

Rules Look at the number before 4 and below leave it alone 5 and above give it a shove Make everything after it a zero

2 Rounding to the Nearest Ten 6 Click on the number in the tens place.

Great Job!!! 26 ones tens

ones tens Try again. Remember place value order. 3 5

2 When rounding we look at the number before the 10. 6

2 If it is 5 and above you give the tens place a shove. 6

30 The 2 becomes a 3 and the 6 becomes a 0.

26 rounds to 30

Let’s try another 32 Click on the number in the tens place.

Great Job!!! 32 ones tens

Let’s try another 32 The 2 is below 5. Is it going to shove the 3 or leave it alone? Shove Leave

Great Job!!! 4 and below leave it alone

Try again. Remember the rule. -5 and above give it a shove -4 and below leave it alone

Let’s try another 30 The 3 stays the same and the 2 becomes a 0.

10 121314151716181920 11 Another way Picture the number on a number line and look for the number it is closest to.

10 121314151716181920 11 Another way If you were to find 17 on a number line, would it be closer to 10 or 20? 10 20

Try again. Remember the rule. 17 is 7 away from 10, but only 3 away from 20.

Great Job!!! 17 is only 3 away from 20.

Rounding Numbers to the nearest tenth We learned before that you round numbers to estimate how much we have. We can round numbers to figure out approximately how much we owe for a bill.

Rounding Numbers to the nearest tenth When rounding to the nearest tenth it is like rounding to the nearest 10 cents in money. If you don’t have exact change you can round to find how much you will pay.

Rounding Numbers to the nearest tenth How do we do this? Just like with rounding to the nearest ten and hundred.

Rounding Numbers to the nearest tenth Step 1: 1.Look at the number to the right. 2.Is it a 5 and above or a 4 and below 3.Make the change to the correct place 4.Everything else after the number being changed becomes a zero

Let’s Try 125125.4545 Which number is in the tenths place?
