Topic: Circulatory System
Aim: Describe the structure and function of the 3 types of blood vessels. Do Now: Fill in the word BICONCAVE into your Root Word Organizer HW: Heart ISN

A Platelets B Red blood cells White blood cells C

Review: Identify the part of blood being described.
Most numerous blood cell. Carries enzymes. Involved in blood clotting. Carries oxygen. Largest blood cell. Made up of 90% water. Protect the body against disease. Carries hormones.

Did you know… The body of an adult contains over 60,000 miles of blood vessels! An adult's heart pumps nearly 4000 gallons of blood each day! The average three-year-old has two pints of blood in their body. The average adult has at least five times more!

Arteries Capillaries Veins

ARTERIES Carry blood AWAY from heart Thicker walls

ARTERIES Carry blood AWAY from heart Thicker walls Blood flows at faster rate High pressure Pulse Most arteries carry oxygenated blood

Capillaries Arteries Veins

VEINS Carry blood TO the heart Thinner walls Less pressure No pulse

VEINS Carry blood TO the heart Thinner walls Less pressure No pulse Valves: stop blood from flowing backwards Most veins carry deoxygenated blood

Capillaries Arteries Veins

CAPILLARIES Tiny blood vessels Connect arteries to veins Very thin walls

Capillary diameter is very small.
A typical small artery or vein may be 5mm (in diameter in a human) But a capillaries are approx 10 micrometer about the size of a red blood cell (erythrocyte)

Artery Vein

ARTERIES CAPILLARIES VEINS

Blood vessels in the right arm and shoulder

Arteries of the lower leg & blood supply to the face & skull

What would happen if the artery that transports oxygenated blood to the heart gets blocked?

What would happen if the artery that transports oxygenated blood to the brain gets blocked?

Let’s summarize… Identify the three types of blood vessels. Why are arteries very muscular? Identify where each type of blood vessel carries blood? Why are capillaries so thin? Why do veins have valves? In which blood vessel is your pulse felt? Explain why.

Review: Identify the type of blood vessel being described.
Low blood pressure Where diffusion of substances occurs. Contains valves Carry blood away from the heart Connects arteries and veins Red blood cells move in single file Elastic and flexible. Used to feel pulse.
