2 History Started to appear on land about 35 million years after Amphibians Some of the Amphibian species began to change for a life better suited on land Thicker skin, strong legs, eggs with shells Known as first animals to live out of water

3 Characteristics Thick skin to prevent water loss Ectotherms that are active when it is warm and slow down when it is cold Amniotic egg that holds fluid that protects the embryo Egg also has a shell Lungs to breathe Internal fertilization Once the egg is fertilized a shell will form around the egg

4 Kinds of Reptiles Turtles and Tortoises – Tortoises live on land and Turtles spend much of their time in water They have shells for protection from predators Crocodiles and Alligators – Eyes and nostrils on top of their head for hunting Crocodiles have a narrow, pointed head, while Alligators have a broad rounded head Carnivores, meat eaters

5 Snakes and Lizards – Most common reptiles Carnivores Snakes have special organs in mouth tohelp them smell prey Some snakes have venom and some use a squeezing technique to catch prey Snakes can open their mouths very wide to swallow prey whole

6 Lizards are omnivores, meat and plant eaters Loosely connected lower jaw but do not swallow their prey whole Some can break off their tails to escape predators

7 Tuatars- Live on islands off the coast of New Zealand Look similar to lizards Do not have visible ear openings Most active at night when temperatures are low
