She was the daughter of Derick du Pre and Iris du Pre.Jacqueline had two siblings: an older sister, Hilary and a younger brother, Piers. Jacqueline was already showing musical promise at the age of 4 when she first heard the sound of the cello on the radio. She listened to the entire piece without moving a muscle and then said to her mother, “Mummy, I want to make that sound!” and the course of her life was set. Jacqueline’s old house in Oxford

At the age of ten, Jacqueline became a pupil of William Pleeth (a famous performer best known as a chamber musician) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and won a international competition. At the age of 12, she was performing in concerts for the BBC. Jacqueline furthered her studies with Pablo Casals in Switzerland, Paul Tortelier in Paris and Mstislav Rostropovich in Russia. 6 Career During her career, Jacqueline performed with many orchestras and soloist. Her first performance earned her international recognition in 1961 with the Symphony Orchestra playing the Edgar concerto. For that performance, she used her first Stradivarius cello given to her by her admirer and godmother Ismena Holland. Jacqueline called her cello “Davidov”. Jacqueline’s famous performance of “The Trout” with Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta, Pinchas Zuckerman and Daniel Barenboim led to the famous film by Christopher Nupen. 8 Awards Click here to go back to the home pagehere Jacqueline du Pre received several fellowships from music academies and honorary doctorate degrees (a honorary doctorate degree is a really really rare and special degree) from universities as an acknowledgement to her talent. At the age of 31, she was made a OBE in 1976. As a child, Jacqueline had won many awards,medals and trophy from competitions.In 1960, she won the gold medal of the Guildhall School of music in London and the Queen’s prize for British musicians.

9 Marriage Click here to go back to the homepagehere At the Christmas of 1966, Jacqueline du Pre met Daniel Barenboim who was a pianist and orchestral conducter.They had many performances together. Jacqueline converted to Judaism for the marriage

10 Jacqueline’s last years Click here to go back to the main pagehere In 1971 when Jacqueline was only 26, a mysterious ailment affected her cello playing as she began to lose sensitivity in her fingers. Eventually, she was soon diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and retired in 1973. Although she taught a little and occasionally appeared in public, she was never able to play the cello anymore. The disease caused her health to deteriorate and led to her death on October 19,1987 at the age of 42. Her husband was with her when she died. Jacqueline left her instrument to Yo-yo Mah.
