5 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 Water Water is essential for our bodies to function properly. Nearly 2/3 of our bodies is water. Water is needed by the body to perform many functions including: controlling our body temperature; keeping our joints moving; helping us to swallow our food via saliva; forming tears, which moisten our eyes; removing waste from our body.

7 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 Where does water come from? Sources of Water Food e.g. fruit and vegetables, yogurt, soups. Drinks e.g. water, fruit juice, tea, coffee. All drinks count towards our fluid/water intake. Some drinks provide added nutrients.

9 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 How much we need How much water we need can vary from person to person, this can depend on: age; time of year; diet; level of physical activity; climate conditions. More water is needed if it is very hot and if we are being physically active. On average we need about 6-8 glasses of fluid each day.

10 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 How we lose water Our bodies can lose water by: sweating; going to the toilet; breathing.

11 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 What happens if we don’t have enough water ‘Dehydration’ occurs, which means we may: feel thirsty; have headaches; lack concentration; feel tired.

12 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 How do we tell if we are having enough water? We are likely to be dehydrated: when we are thirsty; if we pass dark-coloured urine.

14 © British Nutrition Foundation 2013 Summary Water is essential to our bodies. Nearly 2/3 of our bodies is water. Our sources of water come from food and drink. We are recommended to have 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day. We lose water via sweating, going to the toilet and breathing. Dehydration can occur if we do not have enough water.
