G OODPASTURE ’ S S YNDROME By: Morgan Collins & Heather Ratcliff

W HAT IS G OODPASTURE ’ S S YNDROME ? Goodpasture's Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease that affects both the kidneys and the lungs. The cause is unknown but researchers believe it may have something to do with genetics. Bad Kidneys

H OW IS G OODPASTURE ’ S S YNDROME AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE ? The disease occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly produces antibodies against collagen in the lungs and kidneys. Collagen is a protein that helps form connective tissue. Stained glomerulus from a patient with anti-GBM glomerulonephritis showing a large cellular crescent that contains an unusually prominent component of neutrophils.

S YMPTOMS : The first signs of Goodpasture’s syndrome may include: -Fatigue -Nausea and vomiting -Difficulty breathing -Pale skin When Goodpasture’s syndrome affects the lungs: - shortness of breath -persistent cough, sometimes with blood. When Goodpasture’s syndrome affects the kidneys, symptoms may include: -Blood in the urine -Foamy urine -Swelling in the legs -High blood pressure -Burning or difficulty when urinating -Back pain below the ribs -Swelling of the hands and feet

T REATMENTS : Treatment usually includes oral immunosuppressive drugs. These drugs decrease the immune system's production of Goodpasture syndrome antibodies. Intravenous corticosteroids may be needed to control bleeding in the lungs. Treatment of Goodpasture syndrome also usually includes a procedure called plasmapheresis. This helps remove harmful antibodies from the blood.

O THER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT G OODPASTURE ’ S S YNDROME … Diagnostic tests: -Urinalysis -Blood test -Chest X-ray -Biopsy Goodpasture’s syndrome usually affects young men between 20-30 and older than 60. It more often occurs among whites than among people of other races and ethnicities. It is almost always fatal if it is not quickly diagnosed and treated.
