4 What is Mental Illness? A wide range of disorders that affect mood, thinking, behaviour The major groupings for children / youth: Anxiety disorders Mood disorders including bipolar disorder Schizophrenia/psychotic disorders Substance use and dependency disorders Behavioural disorders Eating disorders Early recognition + appropriate response can minimize the impact of mental illness

12 How are We Responding to Increasing Demands? Increased Collaboration - Fraser Health and Ministry of Children & Family Development Provincial Collaborative process Enhanced Child Youth Crisis Response Service Establish a Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit (CAPSU)

13 10-Bed Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit (CAPSU) Short stay assessment and crisis stabilization children and youth age 6 - 17 years in acute psychiatric crisis requiring urgent hospital intervention Rapid turnover: 5-7 day length of stay Capacity to manage high acuity and elopement for at-risk patients Specialized multidisciplinary team with dedicated child and adolescent psychiatrists Will operate 24 / 7
