56 56 40+ years of LGBT Rights 1967 – Homosexuality decriminalised for gay men over the age of 21 1969 – Stonewall riots in New York – after gay bar raided – raids common at this time 1970 – First Lesbian and Gay Pride March in New York 1970 – London Gay Liberation Front established.

57 57 40+ years of LGBT Rights 1975 – Action for Lesbian Parents founded after three high-profile custody cases where lesbians were refused custody of their own children 1980 – Scotland decriminalises homosexuality 1982 – Male homosexuality decriminalised in Northern Ireland, but only after appeals to European Court of Human Rights 1984 – Chris Smith (Labour) is first MP to come out

58 58 40+ years of LGBT Rights 1988 – Section 28 Local Government Act introduced which stated that a local authority shall not... promote the teaching in any... school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a “pretended” family relationship 1991 – World Health Organisation deletes homosexuality from International Classification of Diseases 1994 – House of Commons vote to reduce gay male age of consent from 21 to 18

59 59 40+ years of LGBT Rights 1998 – Human Rights Act adopted by UK 1998 – House of Lords blocks attempt to equalise age of consent to 16 1998 – Crime and Disorder Act – Police acknowledge homophobic hate crime 1999 – Stephen Lawrence Enquiry – racial incident and homophobic incident terms adopted

60 60 40+ years of LGBT Rights 1999 – Police Community Safety Units established 2000 – Age of Consent equalised for all to 16 2000 – Ministry of Defence scraps ban on admission of LGBT people to armed forces 2003 – Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) It is made illegal to discriminate against anyone in work or training based on their sexual orientation

61 61 40+ years of LGBT Rights 2003 – Sexual Offences Act repeals Gross Indecency Law, which had been used to target gay men. 2004 – Gender Recognition Act gives trans people over 18 legal recognition of their acquired gender 2004 – Civil Partnerships Act gives registered civil partners most of the same rights and responsibilities as married couples 2005 – s 146 Criminal Justice Act 2003 empowers courts to impose tougher sentences for offences aggravated or motivated by victim’s sexual orientation

62 40+ years of LGBT Rights 2006 – Equality Act 2006 Part 3 Introduces legislation to address Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation which includes defining discrimination and harassment and legislation to protect citizens against discrimination and inequality. 2008 – Criminal Justice and Immigration Act Part 74, Schedule 16 Hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation amends Part 3A of the Public Order Act 1986 (c. 64) (hatred against persons on religious grounds) to make provision about hatred against a group of persons defined by reference to sexual orientation
