3 IT as Service Provider Just like….. The Goal
Inexpensive, pay as you go, pay for what you use Ubiquitously available Reliable Choice of providers VMware’s goal is to bring a new level of simplicity to IT and to enable our customers to move toward the model of IT as a service provider…delivering IT services to the organization in much the same way as phone service or electricity services are delivered. Just like those services, IT as a service enables business users and application owners to: Easily request services Specify desired service levels Consume and pay for those services All with high degree of reliability and without having to understand the underlying infrastructure. In essence, this approach hides the complexity of the infrastructure/plumbing from the users. It changes how end users request services and how IT delivers service levels with dynamic, flexible and reliable IT infrastructure. This transformation positions IT as a service provider with the ability to seamlessly interact with end users, clearly understand and manage their expectations, ensure infrastructure delivers and transparently allocate costs for services delivered. 3 3 3

4 The Management Challenge Today
IT manages infrastructure components IT is measured on business outcomes Reliable service Server Storage Network etc However, today’s IT infrastructure presents barriers to achieving this goal. IT infrastructure is increasingly complex and inflexible. This complexity causes the typical company to spend upwards of 70% of the IT budget simply on maintaining the status quo, leaving little room for innovation. This overwhelming cost and complexity is partially due to the current approach of IT management – managing component-level infrastructure in application and hardware silos. [click] However, IT is held accountable for delivering what the business needs (e.g., reliable service, a responsive CRM system, an e-commerce site that supports peak shopping periods) not on whether or not a particular server or other piece of infrastructure is operating correctly. Focusing only on component-level management is not a sustainable approach. IT needs to manage what it is measured on – business outcomes – requiring a fundamentally different and better approach that raises management to service levels. The question is, how does IT make that transformation? We believe that while the notion of service-level management is not new, virtualization in general and VMware in particular bring unique enablers to bear that make managing IT fundamentally better. At this point, let’s take a minute to review some of the basic attributes of virtualization that introduce new considerations and opportunities for IT management. Component-Level Management Service-Level

5 Virtualization Fundamentally Changes the Game
New Considerations… New items and relationships not present in physical environment Dynamic and fast growing environment Templates Snapshots & Clones VMs …and New Opportunities! Enables greater automation Properties solve IT management problems in a new way Managing in a virtualized environment introduces new considerations. For example, there are: 1. new items and relationships that need to be taken into account that are not present in dealing with physical assets. New entities to manage: VMs, templates, clones, etc. New attributes and relationships: snapshots, lineage, mappings New associated actions: VMotion, clone, record/replay 2. Dynamic and fast growing environment Workload location changes Quick entry/exit of VMs Temporal state of VMs (e.g., suspend, delete) Lower barriers to change New Opportunities Greater Automation VMs are standardized software containers Software files that can easily be move, copied, managed New types of automation operations are available (clone, VMotion, snapshot Properties can be leveraged to solve IT management problems in a new way Linked clone provisioning, capacity over-subscription Ease of introspection Ability to control any virtual infrastructure action via policies Auto-remediation to meet performance, availability, security SLAs 5

6 Virtualization Fundamentally Changes the Game
New Constructs The ability to make apps self-describing, self-deploying Allows management of multi-tier applications as a single entity Utilizes industry standard OVF to provide instructions on how to deploy Simpler, application centric view of management Applications can now be written to monitor and scale themselves vApp App OS Availability = 99.99% Security = High Performance = 500 msec SLA Definitions One of the key enablers to the elastic, self-managing, self-healing compute utility is a new model for describing and deploying applications: vApps which come to market later this year. vApp is the UPC barcode that specifies policies for applications running on the VDC OS Anyone using VMware Infrastructure can use the vApp to encapsulate a multi-virtual machine application ISVs can use VMware Studio to create vApps that can be automatically updated and maintained by VMware Infrastructure vApp turns new and existing application into self-describing and self-managing entities. vApp leverages OVF, an open industry standard, to specify and encapsulate all components of a multi-tier application as well the operational the policies and service levels associated with it. Just like the UPC bar code contains all information about a product, the vApp gives application owners a standard way to describe operational policies for an application which the VDC-OS can automatically interpret and execute, leveraging dynamic capabilities in the platform. Again, the platform itself absorbs many of the management tasks required to ensure the service levels of the application. Vmware’s vSphere enable you to “set and forget” policies, knowing that the application will be monitor and scale itself, freeing up the IT resources that would normally be involved in manual execution of those activities. Reducing the burden of management in this fashion translates to significant if not unprecedented savings in operational expenditures. 6

7 VMware Uniquely Enables Service-Level Management
vCenter Product Family Unified control center for SLA-driven management across dynamic infrastructure VMware vSphere 4 The industry’s leading virtualization platform VMware vSphere 4, the industry’s first leading virtualization platform, abstracts applications from complex underlying compute, storage and networking infrastructure so IT can focus on managing service levels and creating business value. VMware vSphere also gives the underlying infrastructure the intelligence to automatically ensure the service levels with built-in management capabilities such as dynamic load balancing and fault tolerance. The vCenter family of products provides a unified control center for service level management across complex underlying infrastructure. Together, vSphere and vCenter represent the only complete stack for building and managing the private cloud. vSphere and vCenter understand and execute policies associated with infrastructure and applications which enables IT to simplify or eliminate routine management tasks. This transformation shifts the paradigm from mere component-level infrastructure management to cloud-based delivery of IT services, dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of managing IT. The Only Complete Stack for the Private Cloud

8 vCenter Management Product Family
What is the vCenter product family? Building on the foundation of the vCenter Management Platform (vCenter Server), VMware offers a family of management products that address critical IT processes in the datacenter. Another key aspect of our vCenter strategy is our relationship with partners, with whom we integrate to provide end-to-end solutions that our customers need.

9 VMware vCenter Product Family Delivers
EFFICIENCY Drives operational efficiencies and savings Reduces opex by 50% CONTROL Leverages power of virtualization Delivers broadest and deepest capabilities for service-level management FLEXIBILITY VMware vCenter Product Family Delivers Efficiency, Control and Flexibility Efficiency Drives operational efficiencies and savings. Built-in management features and automation in vSphere and the vCenter Product Family dramatically simplify IT management. Reducing or eliminating tedious day-to-day tasks such as provisioning, monitoring and capacity, change, incident, and performance management dramatically increases the productivity of administrators. VMware customers commonly report doubling server-to-admin ratios. Control Leverages the power of virtualization. Virtual machines are hardware-independent software containers which standardize and automate how applications interact with infrastructure. For example, a VMware vApp packages up all the complexity around an entire application, including the middleware and OS, into a black box that can be treated in a fundamentally more flexible and automated way. vApps can be infused with intelligence that make it a self-describing and self-managing entity whose policies can be interpreted and executed dynamically. Delivers the broadest and deepest capabilities for managing IT services. The vCenter Product Family provides unprecedented IT automation for managing service levels in the areas of provisioning, capacity management, application performance, configuration management, operations management, self-service/request management, and chargeback. Flexibility Enables IT infrastructure to change and respond quickly. vCenter also enables IT infrastructure managers to say “Yes” to requests from their business counterparts. What used to take weeks and months in IT, now takes minutes; infrastructure can be provisioned and service levels managed with unprecedented automation. This new degree of flexibility gives the business more freedom to pursue new strategic initiatives. Enables end-to-end management across the physical and virtual datacenter. vCenter integrates seamlessly with traditional system management tools for reliable end-to-end datacenter management and manages performance of hybrid applications (those with both physical and virtual components). 11 Customer Needs on the Path to 100% Virtualization
Manage hypervisors, VMs and dev/test environments P2V Inventory Mgt Planning Patching Phase 1 - Explore < 100 VMs Manage large, dynamic, shared infrastructure including enterprise applications Performance Mgt Capacity Planning Configuration Mgt Operations Mgt Disaster Recovery Phase 2 - Expand 100 – 1,000 VMs Manage service levels with policy-driven automation across the private cloud Self Service IT Service Mgt Chargeback Phase 3 - Standardize > 1,000 VMs Taking a closer look at how vCenter solutions map to the explore-expand-standardize phases, you can see here that typically customers in the explore phase are just trying to figure out how to handle all the new elements they need to deal with. How does P2V work, how do I manage my inventory of VMs, ESX hosts, storage? How do I create new VMs? How do I do things like patching in a virtual environment. vCenter Server effectively supports customers in this phase of deployment, with core inventory management and provisioning capabilities as well as Converter and Update Manager. However, as customers begin to expand their deployments, it brings with it the need to manage a larger, distributed and dynamic infrastructure. Customers become concerned with managing capacity efficiently, keeping configurations in sync (good datacenter hygeine), perhaps begin to evaluate whether or not to roll out business critical workloads and/or tier 1 apps. As they move out of departmental or silo’d deployments, they will also need to understand how to manage their virtual infrastructure in the context of existing systems management solutions such as OpenView, Tivoli, BMC Patrol, or CA. In Phase 3, as customers mature further, they begin to move toward an “IT as service provider” model that incorporate self-service, charging for resources, and more sophisticated policy-driven automation that will enable lights-out management of the datacenter The best place for focus today – the sweet spot for VMware -is phase 2. Many of the solutions we are offering will help you address your customer’s process requirements and expand VMware’s footprint in accounts. Existing Partner Management Solutions

12 VMware vCenter Management Platform
Unified control center Inventory management Alarms, alerts Templates/provisioning Includes: P2V Conversion Automated patch management Real-time policy framework The foundation of the vCenter family of management products is the VMware vCenter Management Platform (formerly known as VirtualCenter). This proven management platform is purpose-built to manage virtual datacenters in that it is: Aware that resources are inherently shared. Aware of the mobility of applications within and across locations. Aware of the service level contracts between apps and the infrastructure. VMware vCenter Server is the universal hub for virtualization management. It provides centralized, unified management of all the hosts and VMs in your datacenter from a single point. It provides a common framework for managing what are normally silo’d server, networking, and storage resources. It allows for rapid provisioning and detailed monitoring of the environment.

13 vCenter Server: A Key Infrastructure Component
vCenter Server Heartbeat The latest edition, vCenter Server 4, provides key enhancements to enable better management of virtualization, and reduce the complexity involved with setup and ongoing management of virtual environments. These enhancements primarily fall into three categories: Visibility, Scalability, and Automation. VMware vCenter Server will provide key enhancements to enable better management of virtualization Improved, deeper visibility in to the environment Automation with proactive management of vSphere A scalable and extensible platform for virtualization management

You see what appears to be some functional overlap in capabilities that VMware and our partners are providing. For example, both VMware and the Big 4 have solutions for provisioning. The key thing to understand here is that the Vmware solutions are focused on managing our platform only. Partner solutions generally work across mixed/heterogeneous environments spanning multiple virtualization platforms and physical (x86 and non-x86) environments. This provides end-to-end solutions for provisioning, configuration management, performance and availability, etc. The vCenter APIs provide partners with the necessary data and hooks to enable a seamless end-to-end experience. 27 Typical Dev/Test Infrastructure is an IT Headache
Server sprawl – under desks, in closets Aging, cast-off hardware Dirty systems – inability to maintain “clean state” Users and IT bogged down in provisioning requests Release management is resource intensive and error-prone We are all familiar with the problem of server sprawl, but we forget that the problem is often more pronounced in development and test labs. Lab infrastructure may be utilized not only by application development and test teams but also support organizations, training departments, and sales and marketing engineers that need intermittent access to system configurations for development and testing purposes, to create and trouble-shoot customer support issues, set up training labs and give sales demos. Supporting and maintaining lab infrastructure, and responding to the many provisioning requests to set up, configure or tear down system configurations in the lab is a huge burden for lab admins. It’s not unusual for the application development and QA organization to utilize 2-3 times the number of servers required for production, so server sprawl is one of the issues a lab admin has to deal with. The other challenge is that of keeping the systems in consistent known state – if multiple users have access to the same systems, it’s not only likely, it’s practically guaranteed that the systems will become “dirty” – settings will be inadvertently changed for example, which means that the next person who uses it doesn’t really know the state of the system. When we say dirty systems, we don’t’ literally mean what is on the picture here  *Actual customer photos 27

32 Requirements for Disaster Recovery Solutions
Control Cost Minimize Downtime Minimize Risk 73% of executives expressed concern with the costs associated with maintaining a secondary data centre --Beacon Technology Partners 93% of companies that lost their data center for ten days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster. --National Archives and Records Administration 92% of users surveyed acknowledged that their companies would face serious consequences if they had to implement their disaster recovery plans. --Dynamic Markets Ltd. [Note: this slide is manually animated, building from left to right] Key Points: Organizations need solutions for disaster recovery that minimize downtime, risk, and cost Traditional solutions for disaster recovery make it difficult to satisfy all of these requirements, forcing tradeoffs between how well organization are protected and how much cost and complexity they can accept in their DR plans Script: When planning for a DR solution, organizations have three main concerns: Cost. How to deploy an effective DR solution, while still controlling the cost of that deployment. Traditional disaster recovery plans are often limited in scope because of the cost—the cost associated with building and maintaining a recovery site, the cost associated with training on disaster recovery processes, the cost associated with testing disaster recovery processes, etc. (click) Minimizing downtime. Not only is it important to protect against major outages and disasters, but protection against downtime from maintenance and hardware failures is also key. After all, end users don’t care about the cause of downtime. So, companies seek to minimize all downtime as part of a comprehensive BC/DR plan. Minimize risk. Not only are companies concerned with the risk of major financial losses due to a disaster, but there is also the risk that their DR plan won’t actually work when they need it to. Only a well tested and automated recovery plan can ensure that recovery is reliable and repeatable. Effective disaster recovery is a business imperative, but is very difficult to achieve

33 Challenges of Traditional Disaster Recovery
Complex recovery processes and infrastructure Dependent on perfect training, documentation, and execution Failure to meet recovery requirements Recovery takes days to weeks Recovery tests often fail Significant IT time and resources consumed ? ? ? ? ? ? [Note: slide builds manually from left to right] Key Points: Disaster recovery in the traditional physical x86 world is hard for the following reasons: Easiest and most reliable recovery requires complex server and recovery site infrastructure The recovery process is also typically fairly complex due to hardware dependencies, application dependencies, etc. Due to the complexity of the process, having accurate and up-to-date documentation (a disaster recovery “runbook”) is essential, as are ensuring that everyone is thoroughly trained on recovery procedures and executes them correctly when needed As a result, recovery requirements often fail to be met: recovery takes too long, is often unsuccessful, and requires significant investment of IT $$ and staff Script: Traditional disaster recovery plans depend on a very complex set of processes and infrastructure: duplicate datacenters, duplicate server infrastructure, processes for getting data to a recovery site, processes for restarting servers, processes for reinstalling operating systems, and so on. Because disaster recovery can be some complex, organizations often find themselves unable to provide good protection to more than a privileged few of their production workloads, leaving other workloads (e.g. file/print servers, internal web servers, departmental applications) unprotected or poorly protected. Because of the complexity of disaster recovery plans and infrastructure, organizations are heavily dependent on significant amounts of personnel training, on the accuracy and completeness of thick paper “runbooks” that document the recovery process, and on perfect execution of the recovery process when an outage does occur. Because testing is disruptive and expensive, organizations have a limited ability to ensure that all of their training, documentation, and execution is practiced and can successful recover their IT services. As a result of these challenges, tests of recovery plans often fail; basic recovery of critical workloads – if successful at all – often takes days or weeks; and a significant amount of IT time and resources are consumed by managing and maintaining recovery plans. In short, most firms fail to meet the continuity requirements set by their organizations. ? ? 33 33

35 VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Overview
Site Recovery Manager leverages vSphere to deliver advanced disaster recovery management and automation Simplifies and automates disaster recovery workflows: Setup, testing, failover Turns manual recovery runbooks into automated recovery plans Provides central management of recovery plans from the vSphere Client Key Points: VMware is building on the core properties of VMware Infrastructure that make it so useful for disaster recovery with a new product—VMware Site Recovery Manager Site Recovery Manager is a product that simplifies and automates disaster recovery Site Recovery Manager helps organizations to directly address the challenges of disaster recovery that were mentioned earlier: meeting RTO requirements, reducing cost, and reducing risk Site Recovery Manager is a separate product from VMware Infrastructure Script: VMware has been working to leverage the disaster recovery features and capabilities of the VMware Infrastructure platform with a new product developed specifically for disaster recovery. This new product will simplify and automate the key elements of disaster recovery: setting up disaster recovery plans, testing those plans, executing failover when a datacenter disaster occurs, and failing back to the primary datacenter. This new product, VMware Site Recovery Manager, will make it possible for customers to provide faster, more reliable, and more affordable disaster recovery protection than previously possible. Although not a part of VMware Infrastructure, Site Recovery Manager works closely with VMware Infrastructure to manage and automate disaster recovery for virtual environments. 43 Top 3 Reasons Why VMware is the Right IT Investment in a Tough Economic Environment
Reduce Physical Infrastructure Cost 1 Reduce Datacenter Operating Cost (e.g. Power & Cooling) 2 Minimize Lost Revenue Due to Downtime 3 VMware provides tangible CapEx and OpEx cost savings. In this tough economy, with declining IT budgets, the Top 3 Reasons to adopt VMware virtualization software: Physical Infrastructure Cost Reduction: With virtualization, you can reduce the number of servers and related IT hardware in the datacenter. This leads to reductions in real estate, power and cooling requirements, resulting in significantly lower IT costs. VMware virtualization solutions makes it possible to achieve significantly higher resource utilization by pooling common infrastructure resources and breaking the legacy “one application to one server” model. Datacenter Operating Cost Reduction: Virtualization offers a new way of managing and automating your IT infrastructure and can help IT administrators spend less time on repetitive tasks such as provisioning, configuration, monitoring and maintenance. VMware virtualization improves your organization’s operational efficiency --- increasing flexibility & responsiveness Downtime and Risk Reduction: Eliminate planned downtime and recover quickly from unplanned outages with the ability to securely backup and migrate entire virtual environments with no interruption in service. VMware virtualization increases your Application Availability & improves Business Continuity. 43

44 VMware Delivers Tangible Business Outcomes
Reduction in Datacenter Capital Expense Reduction in Datacenter Operating Expense Reduction in Risk $14,235 $30 MM $5,694 0.3 – 1.0 $4 MM This is an example of a VMware customer’s dramatic results from building this transparent cloud infrastructure is an economic breakthrough. Customers save up to 60% in CapEx on a per application basis. Similarly customers increase labor productivity / decrease datacenter operating cost by ~2-3x. CapEx. VMware has hundreds of documented customers case studies where companies have been able to decrease the physical infrastructure cost per application by more than 50%. OpEx Before VMware, IDC claims an average of about 30 servers per admin. After virtualization, they typically see the number increase 3x. In the TAM program, we considered collecting this statistic. A large money management firm in the US achieved 300 : 1 ratio  (Approximately 1500 VMs to 5 Admins). A leading banks in the US with about 2000 VMs had between 8 to 10 VI administrators (200:1). IDC has claimed that average server to admin ratios with VMware are 3x or 90 server per admin (John Humphreys, VForum preso / Virtualization 2.0). Risk reduction: A $2 bn insurance company calculates that before VMware they would have taken about 40 hrs to recover from a disaster resulting in about $30 MM business loss. After VMware they would need about 4.5 hrs to recover from disaster, reducing the business loss from $30 MM to about $4MM. 54 vCenter AppSpeed Use Scenarios
1 Allows IT to guarantee application service level Migrate applications from physical to virtual Discover and Map Monitor performance Analyze Root Causes Remediate Problems 2 There are two main use cases for AppSpeed: 1. Guarantee application SLA for virtualized apps 2. Perform an “Assured Migration” Guarantee application SLA AppSpeed allows you to continually monitor the performance of an application ensuring SLAs are met. The product automatically discovers and maps applications and components all the way down to specific database tables. The product will then monitor real-time user end user experience for all transactions – breaking down performance into its component parts (e.g. network, application and database latency). Any time an application does not meet its assigned threshold, the user is alerted, and can quickly analyze the root cause of the problem. Users can quickly identify and dive into the application’s dependencies to pin-point the source of the problem. Perform “Assured Migration” One of the top inhibitors to Virtualizing applications is the concern expressed by app owners that applications may not perform as well in virtualized environments. The answer is to measure performance on the physical app pre virtualization, and again after it has been virtualized. <note: you are likely to get a couple Qs during Q&A. 1. How do we measure a physical app? We are able to map to a Span port on a physical switch. 2. Can AppSpeed monitor physical applications or elements? Absolutely – applications can be monitored pre-virtualization as per “Assured Migration.” Furthermore, hybrid applications are common (virtualized application with non virtualized components, e.g. physical db virtualized app). The product is able to deal with 1-hop hybrid scenarios elegantly (without needing the use of a SPAN port). Develop pre-virtualization end-user application baseline Measure post virtualization performance
