Stage Fright! (or How to Control Presentation Anxiety) You must talk yourself out of negative thoughts Identifying the causes of your anxiety will allow you to do something about them

Step 1: identify the fears I’ll forget what I want to say! Listeners won’t understand me! I don’t know the people in the audience!

Step 2: Replace Your Fears with Positive Thoughts Fear: Everyone will see how nervous I am! Positive Thought: Nervousness is normal. Everyone feels the same way. And I don’t look as nervous as I feel.

Step 3: Share your Strategies If you feel alone, you are alone. If you share your negative thoughts with your classmates, you will see that you are similar, and not alone.

Try to “Speak Up” in Fun or Nonthreatening Situations Make yourself give a toast (in English) at a birthday party. Give the order in Restaurant Ask a questions when you are an audience member during another classmate’s speech.

Plan, Prepare, Practice! The more you prepare, the more confident you will feel. If you practice your presentation in front of a mirror and time yourself, you will know that your presentation is the right length of time. Try your presentation in front of family or friends first. Get their feedback.

Use Visual Aids A picture says a thousands words. A picture or diagram gives the audience something to focus on besides you. What visual aid will you create to introduce your classmate?

Breathing Deeply and Slowly One of the oldest techniques for relieving stress – Take a deep breath. – Hold it. – Let it out slowly – Do it over and over until you feel calm See handout for more techniques

Suggestions for Listeners Give the speaker “positive reinforcement.” Show the speakers you are interested in what they are saying. Don’t chit-chat with your neighbor. Smile, nod your head, take notes – this will give the speaker confidence.
