3. Nursing Building Exterior Community Environment: Narrative The shortage of registered nurses in Texas exceeds 20,000. To support this critical workforce need, Alamo Community Colleges in San Antonio has expanded courses and degree plans to educate nurses and healthcare workers. The new Nursing and Allied Health Complex at ACC’s San Antonio College provides state-of- the-art clinical environments and teaching labs to support this growing program. The new facility will allow the College to double its enrollment within three years from 500 to an estimated 1,000 students.

4. Public Dental Clinic Community Environment: Continued The 120,000 SF facility includes a public clinic as well as classrooms and clinical labs that emulate real-world healthcare environments. "The college is keeping pace with technological advancements that move the healthcare industry forward. We are delighted that the new facilities will expand our excellent programs to involve more students and faculty, and ultimately benefit the community,” says San Antonio College President Dr. Robert E. Zeigler.

5. Simulation Lab/Classrooms Learning Environment: Narrative The facility supports Dental Technician and Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, Medical Transcription and RN Nursing programs. Skill labs, exam rooms, nursing simulator labs, critical care labs, LDR rooms, a pediatric lab, open nurse stations and an ambulance bay module include SimMan technology, beds, and equipment used in today’s hospitals. The complex design and engineering provides full hospital simulation tied to video recording and monitoring for teacher supervision and instruction.

Flexible Spaces Learning Environment: Continued The facility features flexible, presentation-ready classrooms; open- area student lounges; and administrative offices as well as sustainable building strategies including solar shading devices, extensive natural light and daylighting controls, regional and recycled construction materials, and water efficient landscaping.

7. A True Healthcare Environment Physical Environment – Narrative Furniture selections were based on ergonomics and durability as a response to the many programming challenges of the various departments including 5+ hour lectures and the ability to quickly rearrange classrooms to practice and perform various life saving procedures. Clean architectural lines, stark stone, cherry wood and a palette of soothing blues and greens were used to create a facility that combines five distinct healthcare-related programs into one highly technical, cohesive learning environment.

8. State-of-the-Art Teaching Lab/Classroom Physical Environment – Continued Measures were taken to incorporate a professional clinical environment into a state-of-the-art educational facility. Sheet rubber flooring was used in student labs, clinical spaces and corridors to maintain an environment of professionalism while meeting specific performance criteria for stain- resistance, maintenance and reduced foot fall and fatigue.

9. Conference Room Planning Process: Narrative A committee consisting of faculty, staff, and District facilities personnel were an integral part of the process contributing insight into spatial arrangements, classroom amenities, and overall layout of the facility. Having the individuals that would be teaching in the facility be part of this process helped the design team incorporate features to provide the best learning environment for the Nursing & Allied Health students.

10. Front Entry Planning Process: Continued Our in-house construction administration department was an integral component during construction and move-in of the facility. During the design and construction phase, regular meetings were held with the facilities department and end-users to ensure the original vision and goals were incorporated into the facility.
