Focus – Vocabulary Write on notebook paper in Vocabulary Section of your journal pg. 37 Top Scenery – Curtains, backdrops, or any structures constructed to transform an empty stage into a suitable background for a play. Set – Usually large items used to stage a scene or play Flats – flat pieces of theatrical scenery which are painted and positioned on stage so as to give the appearance of buildings or other background

Glue Hard copy pg 37 Bottom Flats can be soft or hard covered Soft-covered flats Covered with canvas or muslin Originated during Italian Renaissance Hard-covered flats Have a frame that is perpendicular to the paint surface Also called Studio, TV or Hollywood Flats Flats are usually built in standard sizes of 8, 10 or 12 feet tall so walls can be easily constructed, and for easier storage. Flats are often affixed to battens and flown in for the scenes in which they are used. If the flat is to be used for an entire performance, it will be braced to the stage floor. Some casts have a tradition of signing the flats used in their production.

Rail The top or bottom piece of the flat, which determines the width of the flat. Stiles Toggle Corner Blocks Keystone (or Straps)

Rail Stiles The side pieces of the flat, which make up the height. The stiles are always positioned between the rails, so that the bottom is one piece and won't tear apart when placed upright. Toggle Corner Blocks Keystone (or Straps)

Rail Stiles Toggle the middle support, which runs side to side and keeps the stiles stable and square. Corner Blocks Keystone (or Straps)

Materials Needed: Teacher Provided! 2 Pipe Cleaners (Stiles) 1 Color 1 Pipe Cleaner (Rails) A different color 1 Pipe Cleaner (Toggle) A different color 1 Index Card ½ Piece of Construction Paper You will also need scissors, hot glue gun, a pencil and a pen.

1) Rails – Cut 2 pipe cleaners 4”

2) Stiles – Cut 2 pipe cleaners 7” 5/8 inches

3) Glue one rail/ pipe cleaner onto the construction paper at the top. Place one stile on the left. Frame up the stile to the rail. Glue Stile.

4) Repeat Step 3 for the Bottom rail and right stile. Frame up the stile to the rail. Glue Stile.

5) Measure the space for the toggle between the stiles. Cut that length. Glue down the Toggle.

6) Label the Rails, Stiles and Toggle using a marker

7) Using an index card, cut 2 squares 2” x 2”

8) Cut the Squares into triangles to equal 4 triangles.

9) Using an index card, cut 2 straps 1” x.6” (1/2”)

10) Glue the 4 corner blocks to each corner and 2 Straps to toggles. 11) Label 2 corner Blocks and 1 Strap.

12) On 1 corner block Draw in (with pen) the screw/nail pattern on 1 corner block and 1 strap that are not labeled

13) Trim any excess construction paper from the edges of your flat with scissors.
