27  Marriage and family therapy is one of the fastest growing mental health disciplines  Marriage and family therapists (MFTs) are mental health professionals who bring a family-oriented perspective to health care. They evaluate and treat mental and emotional disorders and other health and behavioral problems, and address a wide array of relationship issues within the context of the family system. 29 The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

30 The GRE General  The GRE is a computer based, adaptive test  At the start of the test, you are presented with test questions of moderate difficulty. As you answer each question, the computer scores it and uses that information, as well as your responses to preceding questions and information about the test design, to determine the next question. As long as you answer correctly, you will typically be given questions of increasing difficulty. When you respond incorrectly, you will typically be given less difficult questions.  Once you answer a question and move on to another, you cannot go back and change your answer. 33 The GRE Subject Test: Psychology  Most editions of the test consist of approximately 205 multiple- choice questions. Each question in the test has five options from which the examinee is to select the one option that is the correct or best answer to the question.  Some of the stimulus materials, such as a description of an experiment or a graph, may serve as the basis for several questions.  The questions in the Psychology Test are drawn from the core of knowledge most commonly encountered in courses offered at the undergraduate level within the broadly defined field of psychology.  A question may require recalling factual information, analyzing relationships, applying principles, drawing conclusions from data, and/or evaluating a research design. 34 The GRE Subject Test: Psychology  There are questions in three content categories:  Experimental or natural science oriented (about 40 percent of the questions), including learning, language, memory, thinking, sensation and perception, and physiological psychology/behavioral neuroscience. They contribute to the experimental psychology sub-score and the total score.  Social or social science oriented (about 43 percent of the questions). These questions are distributed among the fields of clinical and abnormal lifespan development, personality, and social psychology. They contribute to the social psychology sub- score and the total score.  General (about 17 percent of the questions), including the history of psychology, applied psychology, psychometrics, research design, and statistics.
