4 THEATRE Ancient Greeks loved live theatre. It was not just entertainment, it was part of the worship of the gods during religious festivals. Every town had at least one open-air theatre. The firsts theatres were invented by the Greeks. AGUS

5 Comedy, Tragedy, Satire The Ancient Greeks invented three types of plays: tragedies (sad ending), comedies (happy ending) and satires (made fun at real people and events). All the actors were men or boys. Thespis was one of the most famous and successful actors in all of Ancient Greece. In his honor, actors today are called thespians. Famous playwrights: Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides (tragedy) and Aristophanes (comedy). AGUS

6 Masks and Costumes Actors used masks, wigs, platform boots to make them look taller and padded costumes to make them look fatter or stronger. The actors’ costumes had to show clearly who was who. The masks had very exaggerated expressions so the audience could see them from a distance. The masks were made of stiffened fabric or cork and then painted. Happy characters dressed brightly, and tragic ones wore dark clothes. AGUS

7 AMPHITHEATRE ❖ The amphitheatres were open-air and built in a semi- circular shape on a hillside. ❖ The shape of the theatres gave everyone in the audience excellent viewing. ❖ Greek theatres had great acoustics by design. The Dionysus theatre in Athens, is the oldest theatre in Ancient Greece. One of the best preserved Greek theatres is at Epidaurus. AGUS

9 Orchestra The orchestra (dancing space) was normally circular. It was a level space where the chorus would dance, sing, and interact with the actors who were on the stage near the skene. AGUS

10 Theatron The theatron (viewing-place) was where the spectators sat. AGUS

11 Skene The skene (tent) was the building directly behind the stage and was usually decorated as a palace, temple or other building, depending on the needs of the play. AGUS

12 Parodos The parodos (passageways) were the paths by which the chorus and some actors (such as those representing messengers or people returning from abroad) made their entrances and exits. AGUS

13 FESTIVALS Festivals were a very important part of life in Ancient Greece, and were a central part of worshipping the gods. They usually included a procession and a sacrifice. AGUS Festivals also included various competitions, which were seen as another way of honouring the gods. There were competitions in music, poetry, drama and also athletics.

14 Festival God The Ancient Greeks held many festivals in honour of their gods. Some of the most important festivals were: The Great Dionysia and Anthesteria Dionysus The Olympic Games Zeus The Heraia Hera The Pythian Games Apollo The Panathenaia Athena Thesmophoria Demeter The Isthmian Games Poseidon Adonia Aphrodite AGUS

15 MUSIC Music was almost a constant part of Greek life, whether for entertainment or as part of festivals and rituals. The Ancient Greeks were music lovers. AGUS We do not know what their music sounded like, but we know from vase paintings the instruments they played

16 Instruments Some instruments they played were: lyre, kithara, cymbals, auloi, harp, tympanon and syrinx or panpipes. AGUS

17 DANCING Dance was an important art form in Ancient Greece. AGUS Everybody loved to dance. The dances had set patterns. The Greeks had war dances, funny dances, funeral dances, wedding dances and a dance for celebrations.

18 OTHER ENTERTAINMENTS AGUS Symposiums or Drinking Parties Knucklebones

19 Symposiums or Drinking Parties Drinking parties or symposiums were a popular leisure activity. Symposiums were often held in celebration of an athletic or poetic victory. AGUS

20 Knucklebones Knucklebones was a popular game for children and adults. One way of playing it is essentially the game jacks. AGUS

22 PAINTINGS AND CRAFTS The greeks thought there was a perfect shape for any object. They made their art as beautiful as possible. ALMA
