Waste is anything that someone doesn’t want that they dispose of.  Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) – residential trash; These materials include items such as packaging, food waste, grass clippings, sofas, computers, tires, and refrigerators. MSW does not include industrial, hazardous, or construction waste.

4  What is recycling? Recycling is being able to find a good use for something that otherwise would be thrown away.  What is compost? Compost is organic material that can be used as a soil amendment or as a medium to grow plants.

7  53.6% of MSW is discarded  34.7% of MSW is recovered  11.7% of MSW undergoes combustion with energy recovery

10  Cartons: Orange juice cartons, milk cartons, juice boxes, soup boxes, ice cream cartons, and more  Metal: Tin and aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans, empty paint cans  Glass: Jars and bottles  Mixed Paper: Newspaper, magazines, mail (junk and personal), phone books, food boxes (remove plastic liner), computer paper, flyers, wrapping paper (no foil or plastic wrap), soda and beer cartons (no food-soiled paper, please!)

16  Wastewater from Cheese is Generating Electricity in Wisconsin Water used to wash out whey and milk from cheese factory equipment is full of nutrients— too full of nutrients It was causing algae blooms to grow in lakes which is bad for the environment Uses microbes to create methane gas (biogas) which will be burned to generate electricity Heat from the process will be captured and sent by pipeline to area dairy manufacturers.
