2 DEFINING DEVELOPMENT Economic Development – has been broadly defined as growth in total GDP and Per Capita GDP (volume and value of goods and services) Social Development – defined as improvements in well-being of people and societies – people centred. 3 MEASURING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Because of complex nature of social development, its measurement is equally complex – composite indices used. Indices of “well-Being” and “Happiness” have been tried but the latter not very widely used. Focus on some factors that directly impact welfare of individuals and societies have been used as proxy for social development. 8 CHALLENGES OF MONITORING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Agreeing on definition of social development - which elements are in and which are not. Measuring Social Development o Poverty indicators o HDI – weights to attach to Income, Health, Education, etc. Recognizing complementarity of different players in measuring social development o National Governments and Official Statistics o Private researchers and research data o International organizations Building Trust in Social development Indicators o Focus on social development issues and not the data.
