DEFINING DEVELOPMENT Economic Development – has been broadly defined as growth in total GDP and Per Capita GDP (volume and value of goods and services) Social Development – defined as improvements in well-being of people and societies – people centred. 3. MEASURING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Because of complex nature of social development, its measurement is equally complex – composite indices used. Indices of “well-Being” and “Happiness” have been tried but the latter not very widely used. Focus on some factors that directly impact welfare of individuals and societies have been used as proxy for social development.
