3 The Great Migration This migration is the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North, Midwest and West from

6 Industrialization In the North, industrialization increased greatly through the years. After the first world war, African Americans headed north to take advantage of the need for industrial workers.

8 Urbanization Blacks moved into northern cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, and St. Louis. This instigated racism in the North and designated neighborhoods for African Americans .

A man wants to work in the north for better wages. He worries about the cold but will deal with it if necessary. He also claims to support the unions. Natchez, MS September 17, 1922 A man wants to support his wife and child but the living conditions and wages are too low in the south. He claims that he can write short stories and wishes to raise the money to move to the north. Lutcher, LA May 13, 1917 A man contacts the Chicago Defender in needed in need of passage to the north. He wanted to bring his family with him but it was to expensive to live in the south for such low pay.

11 Isabel Wilkerson “[The Great Migration] had an effect on almost every aspect of our lives - from the music that we listen to to the politics of our country to the cities even look and feel, even today.” says Isabel Wilkerson. “The suburbanization and the ghettos that were created as a result of the limits of where [African-Americans] could live in the north [still exist today.] And… the South was forced to changed, in part because they were losing such a large part of their workforce through the Great Migration.”
