2 Biography  Born on July 12, 1474 Cuautlitlan, part of Mexico City  He died on May 30, 1548 at age 73  Canonized: July 31, 2002 in the Basilica of Guadalupe, in Mexico City by Pope John Paul 2 nd The first indigenous American Saint  His feast day is December 9

3 Events & Achievements  Juan Diego is known for the appearance of The Virgin Mary. This appearance changed the face of the church He introduced Native Americans as messengers to God

4 Challenges that Juan Diego faced  Juan Diego faced the following challenges: Cutting the roses in December. How to convince the bishop about the Lady’s appearance

5 The appearance  He was walking up the hill in Tepeyac While he was walking up the hill he heard someone calling out his name. There he saw a lady at the age of fourteen.  The Lady asked Juan Diego to tell the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumárraga, that she wanted a “teocalli,” a shrine, to be built on the spot where  He went back to Tepeyac and the lady found hum and told him to gather roses

6 The appearance continue  The lady rearranged the roses in his tila and as he unfolded it he shocked the bishop  On hid tilma, an icon of our lady of Guadalupe was impressed on the cloths.  The bishop built the church the Lady requested

7 Ways of head  He saw the Virgin Mary but didn’t believe it was real Ways of the heart  He trusted in God with all his heart and that lead to the Miracle on his tilma Ways of hands  Juan Diego used his actions to show the bishop Mary had appeared to him.

8 Prayers A prayer said by Blessed John Paul the Second “Beloved Juan Diego, “the talking eagle!” show us the way that leads to the “Dark Virgin” or Tepeyac, that she may receive us in the depths of her heart, for she is loving, compassionate Mother who guides us to the true God.”

9 How we can learn from him  We can learn that if we believe our faith can bring us the best.  We can also learn that sometimes our faith comes up in different ways.  Juan Diego showed us that everyone, if they let God in can make a change in the world.
