1 3 Lesson Plans ERIC SHARP EDMS 6474 COLUMBUS STATE UNIVERSITY

2 Lesson Plan 1  Standard: SB1. Identify the function of the four major macromolecules (i.e., carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids).  Essential Questions:  What are the essential functions of each type of macromolecule?  What are some similarities and differences between the four macromolecules?  What are these macromolecules used for in everyday life?

3 Lesson Plan 1: Macromolecule Notes on SMARTBOARD  Materials: SMART Board with Air Liner handheld device, PowerPoint software  Teaching Strategies:  Cornell style of note-taking (brief and main points)  Highlight key words and phrases as I move through the PowerPoint so students will know most important material.  Allows students to focus and listen more to the material instead of writing everything down.  Assessment:  Other than the summative assessment, the students will be asked to complete a formative assessment at the beginning of class the next day. This assessment will come in the form of a worksheet and will test them on exactly what was talked about the day before during the lesson.

4 Revised Lesson Plan 1: Macromolecule Lecture Using Class iPads  Materials: SMART Board with Air Liner handheld device, PowerPoint software. Class set of iPads for each student.  Teaching Strategies:  Notes will be given through PowerPoint once again.  No notes are taken. Students will have their own iPad to follow along with the notes.  This will allow them to be more interactive and participate in the discussion.  Copies of the notes will be handed out at the end of the lesson for students to keep.  Assessment:  The assessment for the lesson will consist of a formative assessment to show me that they have read and understood the notes provided for them. The formative assessment will prepare them for the summative assessment.

5 Lesson Plan 2  Standard: SB1. Students will analyze the nature of the relationships between structures and functions in living cells.  c. Identify the function of the four major macromolecules (i.e., carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids).  Essential Questions:  What are the primary functions of lipids and carbohydrates?  What effects do too many lipids have on the body?  In what ways are lipids and carbohydrates good for the body?

6 Lesson Plan 2: Lipids and Carbohydrates  Materials: PowerPoint, YouTube, Outline of notes  Teaching strategies:  Notes are provided with blanks so students must pay attention to fill in the blanks.  Also allows students to listen more to what I am saying instead of becoming distracted.  YouTube videos are shown displaying the effects of too many lipids on the body.  Assessment:  The formative assessment will be graded for accuracy so I can see what the students did not fully understand in the lesson and what they took in well and understood. These grades will be kept and a question or two on the formative assessment might be included on the summative assessment so I can see if students took enough time on the formative assessment to remember the question and answer.

7 Revised Lesson 2: Lipids and Carbohydrates Virtual Lab  Materials: SMART Board with Virtual Field Trip application.  Teaching Strategies:  Instead of just taking notes, I will change the lesson to a virtual field trip, that will take students inside someone’s blood vessels so they can see up close and firsthand the effects of lipids on one’s blood vessels and heart.  Assessment:  After the lesson, students should be familiar with such terms as arthroscopic plaque and constriction. A formative assessments will be given in which they will review what they experienced in the virtual field trip.

8 Lesson Plan 3  Standards: Standard(s): S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature.  Essential Questions:  What is the difference between electricity and magnetism?  What makes gravity so important for the world?  Distinguish what units each of the three terms are measured.

9 Lesson Plan 3: Electricity Review Game  Materials: SMART Board  Teaching Strategies:  Students will be playing a Jeopardy review game to prepare them for their summative assessment.  Two will be divided into two teams  Every students will be required to answer a question  Extra points are awarded for participation  Assessment:  The only way students will be letting me know they understand the standard before the test is by how well they do on the review game. Those who have no problems answering their questions should be well suited for the test the following day.

10 Revised Lesson Plan 3: Electricity Review by Online Study Guide  Materials: Study guide posted on an online classroom website.  Teaching Strategies:  Students will be required to complete an online study guide that will be posted on a class website.  It is preferred that students try to complete the study guide first without their notes. Once all that is done that can be, students can then use their notes, book, etc.  Goal is to get everyone better prepared for the test than they would be using the review game.  Assessment:  By actually following directions and trying, I hope this will make students realize how much they can get answer just by using their brain. If they can fill in all the answers and study the worksheet, they should not have any problems on their summative assessment.
