Fire Detection and Rescue Applications By: Eileen Balci

Fire Detection and Rescue Support Framework with WSN Low Latency Management at a Distance – Indirect remote control management system Pre arranged sensors Middleware and Monitoring Software Multi-hop routing protocol based on link quality indicator (LQI)

Node Operating Algorithm While true Receive message from other nodes If receive event alarm Notify this path is not safe (LED blinking) If type of node is equal to NS Forward event alarm to other nodes T = measurement result Forward T to other nodes If T>event_threshold Notify this path is not safe Forward event alarm to other nodes End;

Node Operating Algorithm Cont. This algorithm could be useful to an extent. It is used to detect fire, we might want to use this but change it to “detect” the victim.

Escape Path Algorithm Construct all paths from the topology of sensor nodes With collected data at the sink node If there are alarm-generating nodes Mark paths include them unsafe If T>event_threshold of middleware Mark paths include path of T’s node unsafe Mark reverse paths of unsafe path escape pat h

Escape Path Algorithm Cont. This algorithm isn’t useful for our purposes because we want to find the path to and from a victim not find a path that is safe to travel in during a fire.

Conclusion While this group is using TinyOS and ten sensor TIO710CM motes using fire detection software they are placing the nodes in specific places. We want something that is random not something that is static because we don’t know how our topology will look like every time while in this fire scenario case they do.

Engineering a Search and Rescue Application with a WSN Focuses on a Test-bed application In the test bed, mobile robots are used to act as target and rescuer/pursuer entities The target robot is “in distress” and is remotely controlled by a joystick and has a WSN node mounted on it to signal its presence which are relayed to the control station. A rescuer robot tries to find the target robot

Application Cont. It seems that there are preplaced motes that receive info from the robots and are sent back to the Control Station (again, these motes are not randomized) Also in this case, the target (in our case it would be our victim) is mobile and as it moves its location is updated and info is relayed to the Control Station where the rescuer robot can gain info and move towards the target.

Examples

Technology It seems TinyOS is a common tool for WSN’s. What kind of mote or node we use really depends on what functionality we want.
