BBC News, 20 th March 2010 at 16.47 Police have battled with thousands of demonstrators during clashes between the English Defence League (EDL) and Unite Against Fascism (UAF) in Bolton. Sixty-seven people were arrested, including the UAF protest organiser on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder, police said. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/8577777.stm BUT, at this time, 16.47, the organisers themselves did not know that they had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy so why did the police report this to the BBC?

UAF immediately countered Put key facts into public domain: the police attacked us inside the designated UAF area Unflinchingly unapologetic: we did nothing wrong For those arrested: coordinated legal defenses demand lifting of all unreasonable bail conditions Secure political, financial and picture-building support from people present on the day and their networks Set up a campaign: Be consistent in the truth and dogged in the pursuit of it

Police and Council Accountability? No Show! 25 th March community meeting

25 th March community meeting Communities’ questions submitted to the Council and Police and BCOM…. Written replies submitted from Council Chief Exec on behalf of the council and the police and from BCOM. Community: Why did the Police keep the Asians outside the square and not let them join the rally?.....and the faux pas Police and Council response: “It is not our understanding that people were not prevented from joining the rally and a group of mainly Asian people did join the rally in the square during the afternoon. ” i.e. It is our understanding that Asian people were prevented

Developing evidence base Using already existent networks Using uaflegal email to communicate and triangulate information Encouraging word of mouth In people’s own words/pictures - with precision

Evidence Base - Court Cases Witnesses who were there and who approached j4b identified 62 incidents involving 99 police numbers. Cases range from verbal abuse by police through to physical assault through to indications of information cross over about anti fascists between the police and the EDL 55 arrests, 5 charged plus 3 leaders under conspiracy investigation

National and Local media coverage, Thursday 21st October 2010 as cases against anti fascists fall apart Officer filmed hitting protestor at EDL rally - police investigate A police spokesman said: "“GMP has received a complaint in relation to footage which appears to show a man being inappropriately struck during his arrest at the EDL protest in Bolton in March 2010. “The footage is now being viewed by officers from Greater Manchester Police's professional standards branch.Greater Manchester Police “The case has been voluntarily referred to the IPCC because of the public interest issue. “The officers in question are not on restricted duties.

Conspiracy investigation stopped Howard Gough, reviewing lawyer for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said: “I have concluded that there is insufficient evidence to bring charges in this instance.” (19 th Nov, 2010)

31 st August 2012 4 th Sept 2012 Guardian Newspaper, Police officers to face magistrates after protester's arrest at anti-EDL rally Officers summonsed to face perverting course of justice charge after CPS dropped case against protester who was struck in face

2nd September 2013 justice4bolton.org discovered footage of my arrest and, after viewing the footage and “having a word with the officers”, the prosecution solicitor at the Court decided to offer no evidence. The police have had to confront the reality that surveillance is a two way street, even if currently the State’s side of the street is a good deal wider. Paul Sutcliffe, arrested by a ‘snatch squad’, compensated having brought claims for false imprisonment and malicious prosecution.

2nd September 2013 Dogs used as a weapon is a vicious form of assault. Over 30 years since the murder of Blair Peach, has policing fundamentally changed? It seems not.” Jason Travis, seriously wounded by police dog and now compensated for false imprisonment, human rights breach and assault.

2nd September 2013 “Despite paying me compensation, the police officer that arrested me has had no reprimand for his violent and bigoted actions against me. Furthermore, the police have offered no adequate justification for their reckless, unprovoked aggression and violence at the Bolton demonstration.” Dane Kelly, subject to homophobic abuse, falsely imprisoned and subsequently prosecuted based on a police officer’s account.

2013-2014 Dropped all prosecution cases against anti fascists A number of outstanding civil actions Still unpublished IPCC report – concluded in January 2012 Now – pending appeal for JR of IPCC for misleading in law

www.justice4bolton.org 3 rd July 2014 Physical Violence in Bolton Town Hall by “supporters” of UKIP and Tories who opposed a replacement Mosque Events in Bolton Town Hall last Thursday afternoon (3rd July) exposed – for all to see – the strategy underpinning the far right: use the platform of democracy to try and smash that very democracy through physical violence, verbal intimidation and threats. Now it must be STOPPED – dead in its tracks.

Next steps Public Lobby, 09.30am, 22nd July, Royal Courts of Justice, the Strand, London Community, Trade Union and Faith Groups, JOIN the Lobby and Send Support Messages Publishing the IPCC report about Bolton** and **A People’s Enquiry**into what happened that day are essential for future openness and accountability. Ensuring the police STOP treating us like criminals goes hand in hand with Ensuring the police START applying the laws that exist to criminalise those who do incite racial hatred and physical violence.
