Quick Review 1. The name for the supercontinent in which all of the Earth’s continents were connected: Pangaea 2. About how far do tectonic plates move in one year? Just a few centimeters

Quick Review 3. How old were the fossils of the Mesosaurus that were found? 280 million years

Quick Review 4. Based on the table, is it possible that Africa and South America were once connected? Explain. Yes, they were probably connected because Mesosaurus fossils were found in both locations even though they are thousands of miles apart today.

Quick Review 5. Based on the information in the table, do you think the Cynognathus would be found in South America? Explain. Yes, because South America and Africa were once connected.

Objectives BY THE END OF THE DAY YOU WILL: 1.Be able to describe the types of convergent plate boundaries. 2.Be able to identify the landforms which occur at those boundaries.

Essential Question  What happens when the surface of the earth moves?

Is the Earth one solid rock? 1. Boundaries are the spots were two plates meet 2. Convergent Boundaries : where two tectonic plates are moving toward one another a.The word converge means come together.

Types of crust (or plates)  Continental- They have land on them  Oceanic- Completely underwater

Convergent boundaries 3. There are three different types of convergent boundaries. a. Oceanic – oceanic = two plates with oceanic crust are colliding. b.Oceanic – continental = a plate with oceanic crust is colliding with a plate with continental crust. c. Continental – continental

Convergent Continued c. Mountains form at continental- continental convergent boundaries

Convergent Cont. 4. Underwater convergent boundaries form trenches. a.A trench is like a deep ditch in the seafloor.

Convergent Cont. 5. Convergent boundaries on land form mountain ranges.

Guided Practice

1. Label the type of convergent boundary shown below. 2. Put a star next to the image(s) that show a boundary where trenches form and a dot next to the image(s) that show a boundary where mountains form.

Video While you watch make observations about convergent plate boundaries. After, draw a conclusion about our essential question: What happens when the surface of the earth moves?

I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T “I do my own work!” DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?

Notes away, mouths closed. EXIT TICKET TIME

1. What term below could be used to describe the place where two tectonic plates meet? A.Pangea B.Lithosphere C.Boundary D.Supercontinent

2. Which term below could be used to describe when two tectonic plates are moving toward each other? A.Sliding crust B.Convergent crust C.Sliding boundary D.Convergent boundary

3. Which term below could be used to describe when a piece of oceanic crust is colliding with a piece of continental crust? A.Oceanic – oceanic convergent boundary B.Oceanic – continental convergent boundary C.Continental – continental convergent boundary D.Crust– crust convergent boundary

4. Which statement below correctly describes where trenches form? A.Trenches form at continental – continental and oceanic – continental convergent boundaries. B.Trenches form at oceanic – oceanic and oceanic – continental convergent boundaries. C.Trenches only form at oceanic – continental convergent boundaries. D.Trenches only form at continental – continental convergent boundaries.

5. Which statement below correctly describes the type of geologic formation found in the Himalaya Mountains? A.A oceanic – continental convergent boundary is found. B.A continental – continental convergent boundary is found. C.Both oceanic – oceanic and oceanic – continental convergent boundaries are found. D.Both oceanic – continental and continental – continental convergent boundaries are found.
