We have a fabulous exchange with Germany! Many of you will have already taken part in it. This exchange gives you an insight of German culture (how German people live). Last year, it was the 25 th anniversary of the exchange!

A successful exchange with Germany Learning German would allow you to make the most of this exchange, to keep in touch with your pen friend … The German exchange is by far the most established exchange we do. You would benefit even more from the exchange if you were able to communicate in German.

Which is the most widely spoken language in Europe? Is it English? Is it French? Is it Spanish?

German is the most widely spoken language in Europe More people speak German as their native language than any other language in Europe. Germany: 83 million It is also an official language of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein: 37 million While learning German can connect you to 120 million native speakers around the globe, remember that many people also learn German as a second language.

Germany is … - the world's third largest economy and - the number one in Europe, producing more than one quarter of the European Union's wealth. Do you know any German products sold in the UK?

What do these figures mean for you? You might be working for some of these companies one day…..

You might also work with many British companies who export their products to Germany

German speaking countries have a very rich heritage Literature (Goethe, Thomas Mann, Kafka) The world of classical music is inseparable from the names of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Strauss, and Wagner to name only a few renowned German-speaking composers. Vienna remains an international center of music Art (Kollwitz, Dürer, Klee, Kaninsky) The psychologists Freud and Jung forever changed the way we think about human behavior. The philosophies of Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and numerous others have had lasting influences on modern society.. Scientists from the three major German-speaking countries have won dozens of Nobel prizes in physics, chemistry, and medicine (Einstein, Fahrenheit, Röntgen, Planck, Virchow). One book out of ten in the world is published in German!

German is not as hard as you might think! As English is your native language, then you already have an advantage when it comes to learning German. The two languages share many similarities in both vocabulary and grammar. If you understand any of this... Meine Schwester hat braunes Haar. Sie ist intelligent. Sie studiert Medizin in Berlin. Sie kann gut singen.... then you already know some German! In addition, German is spelled phonetically. Once you learn the system of sounds, it is easy to predict how the spoken word is written and how the written word is pronounced.

What does German sound like? Let’s listen to Amy and Mrs Reiss!

When and Where? On Wednesdays from 3.30- 4.30 pm Mrs Reiss will teach you, she is the German specialist in the school!
