2 YEARS IN OFFICE Ran for President in 1789 against George Washington; Washington won with 69 electoral college votes and Adams with 34. Became Vice President from 1789 until 1797; reelected in 1792 Elected as President in 1797, served one term until 1801

3 POLITICAL PARTY Adams followed Washington’s progress by stressing Republican ideas and values, but he was more a part of the Federalist party He disagreed with the Democratic Republican side as much as he did the Federalists; he was an independent thinker and therefore more a part of is own party. Worked to strengthen the central government Wanted to expand America’s Navy and Army

4 DOMESTIC POLICIES AND EVENTS Adams inherited problem with France when he was sworn in to presidency Sided with Alexander Hamilton and a strong central/national government Signed the Alien and Sedition Acts People had to be residents for 14 years instead of 5 to become a citizen (Neutralization Act) Gave the president power to deport “aliens” (Alien Act) Allowed wartime arrest, deportation, and/or imprisonment to any person deemed dangerous to the country (Alien Enemies Act) Declared that any treason committed through press was a violation, resulting in either fines or imprisonment (Sedition Act)

5 FOREIGN POLICIES AND EVENTS Supported Washington’s Farewell Address; wanted to stay neutral with other country’s affairs Drafted the Model Treaty of 1776 Served as a basis for future relations between foreign countries and the U.S.; wanted free ports for free goods, freedom to trade normal goods, and agreement on a contraband list Also drafted the Treaty of Paris Ended the War of Independence

6 CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENCY Ran for President in 1789, lost to Washington. Washington served for 2 terms, refusing to serve a third. Adams was now a candidate; he was elected as president over Thomas Jefferson Federalists campaigned heavily towards Adams Jefferson Adams

8 SUCCESS OR FAILURE John Adams had many successes during his term as president, including: Established a better, stronger navy Followed Washington’s farewell address and kept America neutral during the war between France and England Signed Controversial, Alien and Sedition Acts Ended war with France using diplomacy Elected John Marshall to Supreme Court

9 SUPREME COURT CASES 4 Main Cases during his Presidency: Marbury v. Madison, 1803 Adams appointed Marbury to Justice of the Peace, Madison did not deliver the commission that would let Marbury take his place in office Hollingsworth v. Virginia, 1798 Presidential approval wasn’t needed in the Constitutional Amendment Calder v. Bull, 1798 Argued that the Ex Post Facto clause only dealt with criminal cases New York v. Connecticut, 1799 Land dispute between private parties; land was sold to two different owners
