Project: Hot Air Ballon Physics Period 4 Lydia Pascale

Introduction In fourth period we were asked to construct a hot air balloon. The hot air balloon will have to be able to float in the air for a period of time. Hot Air balloons were used to study weather and atmosphere. The balloon is made up of wires to attach the balloon and basket and a skirt to help direct the hot air to the balloon.

Standard Learning Objective Standard: 8a Density Is Mass Per Unit Volume 8B Buoyant Force On An Object In An Upward Force Equal To The Weight Of The Fluid The Object Has Displaced Learning Objectives: 1.To design and construct hot air balloon out of tissue paper. 2.Explain the physics of hot air balloon. 3.Measure the time of flight of the hot air balloon and how high did it go? 4.Cite global issues related to the project and give a possible solution/action.

Hypothesis / Problem How can I make a working hot air balloon? If I construct the hot air balloon correctly without holes and very aerodynamically it will float.

Materials Tissue paper Scissors Glue blowdryer

Procedures 1.Fold the tissue paper 2.Place the sample over it. 3.Cut out the pieces 4.Glue the pieces ( insides only ) 5.Flip the balloon inside out 6.Fold the bottom and then glue on the skirt 7.Glue on the circle top

Summary: I built a hot air balloon. I cut out the pieces glued them together, I flipped it then glued the skirt and top on. I tested it and wrote down my data which is on the following slides. Conclusion: If I build my hot air balloon correctly with no holes or errors it will float. This was correct since it did float due the fact that they’re were no holes or errors.

Reflection In this projectI learned that in order to have a really good hot air balloon that works it must not have holes, rips, and other issues. I also learned that you need the right materials and follow procedures for it to be a successful balloon. I enjoy doing this project even if I did it again.

Time for the Physics Hot air balloons are based on a very basic scientific principle: warmer air rises in cooler air. Essentially, hot air is lighter than cool air, because it has less mass per unit of volume

Global Issues The hot air balloon had a HUGE impact on the history of civilization, in that it was the first type of aircraft that existed, and all other aviation development followed from the first discoveries of the early aeronauts. It is not clear that the airplane would have been developed if the Montgolfier brothers had not first proved that people could rise into the air and survive.
