A House… Provides people with shelter & storage
5
Foundation The part of the house that rests on the ground and supports the upper structure All buildings require a solid foundation or the building cannot be constructed properly
6
Once the foundation is finished - the floors & walls of the house can be built
7
Center Beam Girder installed in the middle of the house to support the upper structure
8
Floor Joists Support floor of house - boards run from the front of the house to the rear Center Beam
9
Floor Joists & Center Beam
10
Subfloor First layer of flooring (plywood or particleboard) nailed to the floor joists
11
Walls Wall Studs:Pieces of lumber, usually 2 x 4’s, used for the framework of walls
12
Walls Sheathing:Nailed to wall framework to enclose structure on the outside. Made of plywood or particleboard
13
Walls being put in place
14
Cross Section View of House If you want to remove a wall in a house you must make sure that it is not a WEIGHT BEARING wall
15
Roof 1) Keeps precipitation out 2) Stabilizes the walls
16
Roof Prefabricated triangular framework that supports a roof Truss: Roof can be built quickly
17
Roof Roof Decking:Sheets of lumber (usually plywood) nailed to the outside of the roof trusses
18
Roof Nailed to the roof deckingRoof Shingles: Shingles weatherproof the roof
19
Siding Put on the outside for protection from the weather - attached to sheathing Outside windows & doors are also installed Wood shinglesVinylBrick
20
The house is now Weatherproofed & Secure Interior work can begin
21
Insulation Material used to keep heat or cold from leaving or entering a building Rolls made to fit between floor joists, ceiling joists and wall studs Most popular form is fiberglass
22
Insulation In wallsIn ceilings
23
Inside Wall Covering Drywall:Inside covering of walls and ceilings, made from plaster and sturdy paper (commonly referred to as Sheetrock)
24
Inside Wall Covering Sheets are screwed to the walls and ceilings - cracks & screws are covered with tape & joint compound
