Repùblica Dominicana Est. 1844 By: Briana Savidge

The Repùblica Dominicana is located in the middle of the Caribbean, between the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico. It shares its border with Haiti, as these two countries split the island Hispaniola in two.

»The Repùblica Dominicana came under Spanish rule in 1496 when the first Spanish colony was constructed in the Western Hemisphere at Santo Domingo; four years after Christopher Columbus discovered Hispaniola. In 1697 the Treaty of Ryswick gave the western part of Hispaniola (modern day Haiti) to the French and the eastern part of the island to the Spanish (Repùblica Dominicana). Early map of Santo Domingo The Treaty of Ryswick

»After many years of war Santo Domingo declared its independence from Spain as the Dominican Republic (Repùblica Dominicana) in 1844, but only for a short time. »In 1863, President Pedro Santana returned the Repùblica Dominicana to Spanish rule. »Spain withdrew from the island in 1864, and as a result the second Repùblica Dominicana was proclaimed. Celebrations take place each year in the Repùblica Dominicana, marking its independence from Spain.

» I would visit the Repùblica Dominicana. The people have their own unique customs, food, and traditions. The island itself is beautiful with amazing beaches and ocean views. There are many interesting tourist sites on the island, and the locals are very nice.

»The Repùblica Dominicana’s national game is baseball. (Over 800,000 kids play baseball in the Dominican.) »Spanish is the official language, but English, German, French, and Italian are also spoken. »The Repùblica Dominicana was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first expedition in 1492.
