2 Background knowledge Sound is produced by vibrating objects. As an object vibrates, it produces sound waves that travel through the air (and other substances). The faster an object vibrates the more sound waves it produces per second and the higher the pitch of the sound.

3 Comparing different pitches Changing the tension of an abject, such as a rubber band or guitar string, results in a pitch change. The higher the tension of the object, the higher the pitch of the sound produced. Changing the length of the material available for the sound waves to go through also changes pitch.

4 Comparing pitches Shorter columns of air produce higher sounds than longer columns of air. This is often shown by putting differing amounts of water in identical glasses. There are three small bones in inner ear: the anvil, stirrup and hammer

5 Vo cabulary Waves- movement and motion of an object including sound and light. Sound and light can travel in waves. Vibrations- the motion of movement, sound is made when an object vibrates. Pitch- Sound- Cilia- tiny hairs found in ear send signals of sound to brain.

6 Ear and Hearing The outer ear funnels sound waves toward the eardrum. The eardrum passes vibrations to the middle ear. The middle ear contains three tiny bones that pick up vibrations from the eardrum and pass the vibrations to the inner ear. The inner ear has coiled tubes filled with fluid and tiny hairs called Cilia, that pick up vibrations from the middle ear and causes nerve cells to send signals to the brain. Refer to ear diagram.

7 Things to know! The outer ear is the part of the ear that collects sound and guides them to the eardrum. When sound waves strike eardrum, it causes sound to be heard or experienced through vibrations.

8 Things to know! Sound and Light Definitions Refraction- bending of light through a prism to form a rainbow. Translucent- object that allows light to pass through, but cannot be clearly seen through. Ex: white sheet of paper Waves- movement and motion of an object including sound and light. Sound and light can travel in waves. Vibrations- the motion of movement, sound is made when an object vibrates. Transparent- easily seen through, you can see clearly. Ex: glass jar Opaque- not allowing light to pass through.
