6 Banana activity 1. The farmers plant, grow and harvest bananas in the Winward Islands of the Caribbean (Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada). 2. The warehouse and packagers sort the bananas and get them ready for transport. 3. The exporters and handlers load the bananas onto the ships 4. The shippers transport the bananas to England 5. The shop keepers sell the bananas to their customers in England.

7 Organise your class into groups where each group represents one of the stages in the journey (e.g. the farmers). The group of farmers then discusses and decides how much of the 10p they want/deserve (and their reasons). The decision of each group (and reasons) is then shared with the whole class. It is likely that there will be considerably different views about ‘who should get what’ – negotiation will be essential! (Oxfam/Christian Aid reveal an analysis of what happens in the real world)
