3 Just So You Know… Cochlea: a bony structure shaped like a snail filled with endolymph and perilymph, two fluids. Organ of Corti: contains hair cells, and is found in the basilar membrane separating the cochlear duct and the seala tympani.

4 Listen Up Hearing receptors are called hair cells.
Hearing receptors are located in the inner ear and have an important role in sensing sound waves, vibrations, and in hearing. The movement and bending of the sensory receptors generate impulses or signals from the sound vibrations in the fluid of the cochlea.

5 The Pathway Hair cells (receptors) pick up a sound in the form of a wave. Sound waves, that transfer to vibrations, send impulses through the cochlear nerve (Cranial Nerve VIII) to the auditory cortex in the temporal lobe.

7 Barotrauma Barotrauma is a condition that creates discomfort and damage to the ear by differences in pressure between inside and outside the ear. Symptoms include slight hearing loss, dizziness, ear discomfort, and a stiff or full sensation of the ear.

8 Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease
AIED is an inflammatory condition in the inner ear. Immune cells and/or antibodies attack the cells of the inner ear, mistaking them for harmful foreign invaders. Symptoms include progressive hearing loss and/or dizziness. Tinnitus can occur, which is a roaring or hissing noise heard.
