2 What is a sentence? A sentence is a group of words beginning with a capital letter and ending with a full- stop, exclamation or question mark in written language, containing a main verb. Is this a sentence? The young boy walked to the shop.

3 What is a clause? A clause is a part of a sentence with a verb. However, it doesn’t have to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Is this a clause? were going to the shops

4 Spot the sentences and clauses The woman ate her dinner quickly. I cannot move because my back hurts. who was running really quickly Josie could swim really quickly. which was really smelly

5 Now for some fun! We are going to learn how to embed clauses into sentences to make more interesting sentences. The small girl walked towards the teacher. The small girl, who was eating a mouldy apple, walked towards the teacher. The headteacher stood in the hall. The headteacher, who was hovering on a broomstick, stood in the hall.

6 Now make your own complex sentences. The man could not hear the telephone. The small girl was talking quietly to her friend. The shopkeeper saw the boy leave the shop. Coventry won the FA cup.
