3 Background The first Ghana Living Standards Survey was conducted in 1987 followed by a series in 1988, 1991/1992, 1998/1999 and 2005/2006 2012/2013 survey is the 6 th in the series 3

4 Background (2) It collects information on:  Demographic characteristics of the population  Education  Health  Household income, consumption and expenditure patterns  Prices of consumer items 4

5 Background (3)  Household agricultural production  Non-farm household enterprises  Household asset ownership 5

6 Background (4) 6  Employment and Time Use (including Child Labour)  Housing and housing conditions of households  Household financial services

7 Survey objectives Provide information on the patterns of household consumption and expenditure Serve as the basis for the construction of a new basket for the next re-basing of the Consumer Price Index Provide information for up-dating the country’s National Accounts 7

8 Survey objectives (2) 8 Provide information on household access to and use of financial services Estimate the number of persons in the labour force (Employed and Unemployed) Estimate the number of child workers (or children in employment) aged 5-17 years

9 Survey methodology  The GLSS6 sample was made up of 1,200 Enumeration Areas (an EA has an estimated population of between 450 and 750)  EA distribution by locality : 545 (45%) urban and 655 (55%) rural  Data were collected from a nationally representative sample of 18,000 households (16,772, 93.2%) 9

10 Survey methodology (2)  Six survey instruments/ questionnaires used Household questionnaire made up of: 1. Part A questionnaire (Education, Health, Employment, Migration, Housing conditions) 2. Part B questionnaire (Agricultural production and disposal, Household expenditure, Income transfers, Household financial services 10

11 Survey methodology (3) 11  Data collection involved 30 teams (direct interview)  Fieldwork lasted twelve months and was divided into 10 cycles of 35 days (1,800 households were visited in each cycle)
