Some facts about Afghanistan… War began on October 7, 2001 (Almost 14 years ago) 2,356 Americans have lost their lives between since the war began in 2001. Cost has been $685.6 billion dollars

Some facts about Afghanistan… Total cost between Iraq and Afghanistan is projected between $4 and $6 trillion dollars – includes long term medical care, disability compensation, social and economic costs, military replenishment.

Facts About the War… Obama stands by his claim to have a full withdrawal by 2016 of American troops However he will have to consider the following: – whether a full departure of U.S. troops would weaken the fledgling Afghan forces – diminish American leverage with the Ghani (President of Afghanistan) government – offer an opening to the Taliban and other extremist groups.

War in Afghanistan – Arguments in Support of the War Without U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda and the Taliban will regain control – international terrorism will increase. They will never negotiate The United States can help bring democracy and stability to Afghanistan – Strengthen the economy – Bin Laden’s death has not eliminated the threat

Arguments for the War Increase aid to Afghanistan that helps build infrastructure and a sustainable economy Increase training of Afghan security forces Secure borders Strengthen efforts to provide education to boys and girls in Afghanistan – help to build a modern nation

Arguments for the War The Taliban will never stop trying to regain control of Afghanistan If the U.S. leaves the country will descend into violence and lawlessness because the Afghan government has never been able to provide security for its people.

Arguments Against the War This is the longest war in U.S. history- Our resources would better be spent increasing our security at home
