Burnout  Burnout leads to cutting corners and being more task oriented then patient oriented.  Leads to infection control issues and patients have an increased possibility of HAI’s  Remember you are the patients advocate!  Seek help!  All jobs have stressors  Find somebody to talk it out with  Why did you want to be a nurse? A nurse burnout by the stressors of her job. In Physicians Weekly http://www.physiciansweekly.com/nurse -burnout-hospital-infections/

HAI’s  HAI Defined  Infection that arose 48 or more hours after admission  Was not incubating at the time of admission  Considered prevalent when it meet one or more signs or symptoms included in a CDC definition  Most are preventable. A summary of the hospital setting with nosocomial infections. From Steiros infection control http://steiros.com/Hospital_Acquired_Inf ections.html The Perfect Storm

The Literature  Increases in HAI prevalence with increasing age.  Largest percentages being:  75 and up, UTI’s  75 and up, Gastrointestinal infections  Under 75, surgical incisions  Factors include:  Increased frailty  Immune impairment  Nursing homes, still like a hospital from infection stand point  Nutritional status Couple handling life curveballs well. Found on incpire.com http://incpire.com/news-articles/living-to-100-take- lifes-curveballs-in-stride

The Literature  RTI’s are the leading cause of death in nursing homes in France.  Widespread infection was possible if infection control measures were not implemented within two days.  Average length of time between the start of the infection and the control measures was 6.7 days.  Diagnosis of the first case is critical  Transmission of disease via:  Patients  Visitors  Staff Graph showing the primary HAI’s. Dark Daily Clinical laboratories and pathology new and trends. http://www.darkdaily.com/public-reporting-of- hospital-acquired-infection-rates-still-not- required-by-a-majority-of-states- 40312#axzz2hbrAKug2

Infection Control: What can we do?  Handwash!  Proper hand washing for the healthcare providers is one of the greatest infection control defenses against HAI.  Practice sterile technique  Improving sterile technique is a great way to help reduce the possibility of HAI’s  Used for catheters, wound treatment, and many other treatments.  Help each other!  When a peer is doing something incorrectly let them know  Don’t be mean, you’re on the same team!

What else?  Verbalize your opinions about a patient  Disease can be prevented within a group of patients by the control of one.  Even if you’re wrong it’s better to stay on the side of caution when it comes to a community of patients.  You’re the patients advocate  Do what you think is right for the patient  Always question  i.e. Why is this patient scheduled for a flu shot out of flu season
