2 Guided Notes 1) Southern states that were dependent upon labor-intensive CASH CROPS seceded from the Union. 2) Northernmost SLAVE STATES (border states) stayed in the Union.

Cotton became a major Southern cash crop following the invention of the cotton gin Tobacco was a traditional Southern cash crop dating back all the way to 1607
