The Coptic Church Dogma (Based on the Creed) DG_1: One God DG_1: One God DG_2: The Trinity DG_2: The Trinity DG_3: The Divinity of Christ DG_3: The Divinity of Christ DG_4: The Doctrine of Incarnation DG_4: The Doctrine of Incarnation DG_5: The Doctrine of Redemption/Salvation DG_5: The Doctrine of Redemption/Salvation DG_6: The Divinity of the Holy Spirit “We believe in the Holy Spirit… the Lord, the Giver of Life… proceeds from the Father…who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified…spoke by the prophets”

The Holy Spirit 1)I ntroduction 2) The Holy Spirit is Lord (God) 3) The Holy Spirit is the Giver of Life 4) Proceeds from the Father 5) The Holy Spirit was spoken by the prophets

1)Introduction + The Holy Spirit is one of the three Hypostasis of the Triune God; “God is Spirit” John 4:24 + The Holy Spirit is ranked the same with the Father and the Son; “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit….You have not lied to men but to God” Acts 5:3-4 + The Holy Spirit cannot be separated from the Father and the Son: - “No one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God” 1Corinthians 2:11 - “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted” Matthew 4:1

2) The Holy Spirit is Lord (God) “And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ” 2Thess 3:5 “And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ” 2Thess 3:5 1) Lord’ is one of God’s names: “You shall not tempt /worship the Lord your God” Matt 4:7/10, Luke 4:12/8 => Deut 6:16/13 “You shall not tempt /worship the Lord your God” Matt 4:7/10, Luke 4:12/8 => Deut 6:16/13 2) The Holy Spirit is called ‘Lord’ in many occasions that revealed His Divinity: “And may our God and Father Himself and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all” 1Thess 3:11-12 “And may our God and Father Himself and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all” 1Thess 3:11-12

3) The Holy Spirit is the Giver of Life God created the heaven and earth by the Holy Spirit God created the heaven and earth by the Holy Spirit “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” Genesis 1:2 God breathed in Adam the breath of life God breathed in Adam the breath of life “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into the nostrils the breath of life” Genesis 2:7

4. The Holy Spirit’s “proceeding” “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me” John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me” John 15:26 - From the Father not the Father and the Son - Difference between the words “proceed” and “send” From the Father, the Son is “born” and the Holy Spirit “proceeds”; all in the beginning. However, in a certain time, the Father “sent” the Son “in the fullness of the time” Gal 4:4 and the Holy Spirit (day of Pentecost) ; Acts 2 From the Father, the Son is “born” and the Holy Spirit “proceeds”; all in the beginning. However, in a certain time, the Father “sent” the Son “in the fullness of the time” Gal 4:4 and the Holy Spirit (day of Pentecost) ; Acts 2

5. The Holy Spirit and the Prophets The Holy Spirit inspired the writers of the Holy Book: The Holy Spirit inspired the writers of the Holy Book: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” 2Tim 3:16 The Holy Spirit worked in the prophets: The Holy Spirit worked in the prophets: “And when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word ”the Holy Spirit spoke rightly by Isaiah the prophet to our fathers” Acts 28:25 “like the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” Phil 6:17
