2 168 YEARS OF HISTORY 1971: The City of Birmingham Polytechnic is created through the merger of five colleges: –Birmingham College of Art - formed in 1843 –Birmingham School of Music – dating from 1959 –Birmingham School of Commerce – formed in the early 20 th Century –South Birmingham Technical College – established 1961 –North Birmingham Technical College – created in : The Polytechnic becomes the University of Central England in Birmingham 2007: The University changes its name to Birmingham City University Birmingham Conservatoire c The Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment was formed in 2009 and based at Millennium Point
