4 Problem (1) Communication methods traditionally used in aeronautical environment: Voice analog communications, – VHF, UHF and HF bands (AM); Telemetry digital communications, – L, S, C bands (CPFSK, SOQPSK). … Ivan Iudice 4

5 Problem (2) Some Unmanned Aircraft (UA) applications (e.g. remotely piloting) need communication data- links with specific requirements in terms of data-rate, reliability, security. Ivan Iudice 5 Modulation and coding techniques traditionally used (e.g. for telemetry) are not suitable to transmit at very high data-rates

6 Research Activity (1) The adoption of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), possibly coupled with multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) antenna configuration, is viable to obtain the objectives. Ivan Iudice 6

7 Research Activity (2) Channel models of UA environment are needed to correctly implement MIMO-OFDM technologies and design robust modulation and coding schemes for achieving high reliability. Statistical models: they are well motivated when the time varying path delays arise due to the large number of scatterers. Deterministic Basis Expansion Models (BEMs): they are more useful when multipath is caused by a few strong reflectors and path delays exhibit variation due to the kinematics of the mobiles. 13 Next years: specific objects MIMO-OFDM – Derived model will be used to analytically evaluate the expected performance, and then simulate a possible implementation. – MIMO-OFDM techniques will be implemented in a reconfigurable data-link (SDR paradigm) and tested on flying laboratory at CIRA. BEMs – I will verify whether these models are suitable for aeronautical environments, specifically in UA applications (using both data collected from literature or direct measurements at CIRA).
