Today's Prayer – Oración de hoy Prayer - September 10, 2013 Lord Jesus, you spent a night in prayer before you called your disciples in the beginning of our Church. The Twelve placed their faith, hope, and trust in you. May we join this group with our faith in you, with our hope in your mercy, and with our trust in your providing care. Amen. Father Bill Simmons, C.S.C.

Los adjetivos Adjectives Adjectives perform what function in a sentence?

Gender Agreement You already know that every word in Spanish has a gender: masculine or feminine. El chico = masculine El vestido (dress) = masculine La chica = feminine La camisa (shirt) = feminine

Gender Agreement (pg 59) Adjectives describe nouns. –Ex: the fast car, the red dress, the happy girl. Like the definite (el, la, los, las) and indefinite articles (un,unos, una, unas), the adjectives will also “agree” or “match” with the noun it describes based on: gender –Masculine / feminine Number –Singular (one) / plural (more than one)

Gender Agreement (pg 59) In English, you say “the red shirt.” In Spanish, you need to do the following: 1. Decide the gender of the noun. 2. Decide the number of the noun. 3. Form the adjective to match. 4. Put the adjective AFTER the noun. (This is almost always the rule in Spanish) ADJECTIVE AFTER!!!!

masculine, singular masculine, plural feminine, singular feminine, plural adjectives ending in –o serio adjectives ending in –e interesante adjectives ending in consonant azul adjectives ending in –ador, nationality trabajador seriosseriaserias interesantesinteresanteinteresantes azules azulazules trabajadores trabajadora trabajadoras

Gender Agreement So, “The red shirt.” The shirt = la camisa. red = rojo. 1.Gender of the noun? La camisa = feminine La camisa = feminine 2. Number? One shirt = singular. 3. I need to form the adjective to agree with the noun. Make rojo feminine = roja. 4. Put the adjective after the noun: La camisa roja.

What if it’s plural???? Let’s try “The black pants.” Los pantalones = pants. Negro = black. 1. Gender? Los = masculine. 2. Number? Los is plural, because “el” is the article for a singular masculine noun. The adjective has to become masculine and plural. Negro -> negros. Adjective After = Los pantalones negros.

Gender Agreement (pg 59) Note: For adjectives that end in “e,” they usually match both genders: –El chico paciente, la chica paciente. –El sombrero verde, la falda verde. Many adjectives that end with a consonant match both genders: –El sombrero azul, la falda azul. Some add “a” to become feminine. These adjectives must be learned. –El chico trabajador, La chica trabajadora.

Gender Agreement (pg 59) Your turn! Use your vocab lists to describe the following: 1. The yellow dress= El vestido amarillo 2.The red shirts. ___________________ 3.The blue skirt. ___________________ 4. The blonde girl. _______________ 5. The orange pants. ________________

Gender Agreement Using ES to describe something: You can use “ES” plus the adjective to describe a noun. Remember, you use “es” for one object, “son” for more than one. The shirt is red = La camisa es roja. The shoes are black = Los zapatos son negros.

Gender Agreement (pg 59) 1. The dress is white. ___El vestido es blanco.__ 2.The shirts are blue. ____Las camisas son azules.___ ____Las camisas son azules.___ 3. The skirt is red. ___La falda es roja.___

Describing Yourself To describe ourselves, we use the word soy (I am). Example: I am funny. Yo soy gracioso. Example: I am serious. Yo soy serio. What would change if a girl were speaking? Yo soy graciosa. Yo soy seria. Yo soy inteligente.

Describing Others He/she is… He is funny. Es cómico. She is funny. Es cómica. Jake es serio. Courtney es graciosa. They are… Jake y Chris son serios. Courtney y Breland son serias.
