1 Author names, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 5500 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47803 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. This is where you thank all of the funding agencies and others that enabled you to accomplish your work (RHIT Chemistry Department, M. Brandt, R. DeVasher). TITLE Hypothesis Statement : ABSTRACT Insert informative abstract in this section. Limit your text to150 words. You should employ >/= 32 pt Font. Feel free to include figures as needed (For your information, there are two types of abstracts, descriptive and informative. Informative abstracts are those used in technical disciplines.) Key process elements 1 in an abstract: Reason for writing: What is the importance of the research? Why would a reader be interested in the larger work? Problem: What problem does this work attempt to solve? What is the scope of the project? What is the main argument/thesis/claim? Methodology: An abstract of a scientific work may include specific models or approaches used in the larger study. Other abstracts may describe the types of evidence used in the research. Results: Again, an abstract of a scientific work may include specific data that indicates the results of the project. Other abstracts may discuss the findings in a more general way. Implications: What changes should be implemented as a result of the findings of the work? How does this work add to the body of knowledge on the topic? 1 Adopted by P. Koopman, CMU All abstracts include: The most important information first. The same level of language found in the original, including technical language. Key words and phrases that quickly identify the content and focus of the work. Clear, concise, and powerful language. POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS Define the area within or external to organic chemistry that may potentially benefit from the experiments you ran. Include illustrations, other examples, related issues to your project in this section. DATA Data, figures, tables included here…. CONCLUSIONS Hypothesis statement is written as either a 1) True OR 2) False statement based on experimental results. Other conclusions that came about as a result of your experiments are included in this section. PROCEDURE Insert procedural text here. >/= 32 pt Font. Feel free to include figures as needed. (From Merriam-Webster, a procedure is 1: a particular way of accomplishing something or of acting; b: a step in a procedure; 2a: a series of steps followed in a regular definite order ; b: a set of instructions for a computer that has a name by which it can be called into action; 3 a: a traditional or established way of doing things ; b: PROTOCOL 3a) PROTOCOL Key process elements 1 in a procedure: Purpose statement: Why this procedure? Overview: Start by providing a general overview of the process. Audience needs: Identify prerequisite knowledge and skills, if any. Safety Issues: Highlight any safety issues and other precautions. Materials and Methods: Add a list of equipment, supplies, or parts needed for the procedure. Procedural Outline: Define a logical sequence of steps and substeps, neither too large nor too small. Use the imperative voice for clarity and economy of words. Write to the level of the reader's ability or a little below. Define unfamiliar terms. Include hints and helps. Add illustrations, analogies, models, anything that will aid understanding of the process and the end product. Procedures should include: Concise, minimum verbiage. Factual information. Properly defined acronyms/shorthand. If you use an acronym, spell it out the first time you use it. Include step-by-step instructions written clearly and concisely with technical language that has been properly defined and/or cited with a visual reference.
