10 Break-Through Research Achievements -Technology Transfer- Space sciences –impact of $252.8M on Arizona’s economy. Acted as “mission control” for recent Mars mission. Optical sciences – producing spin-off companies in information technology and imaging that label us “Optics Valley” Medicine – Ventana Medical Systems, spun out of UA in 1985, was acquired by Roche Group in 2008 for $3.4 billion. Medicine – developed first FDA-approved artificial heart Telemedicine – reached 196,204 patients in rural Arizona in 2007 Creating new knowledge

11 More Research Achievements -Technology Transfer- Bt Cotton – bringing savings of >$300M to cotton growers each year Hydroponic tomatoes – using tomato-growing techniques developed at the UA, Eurofresh has created the largest greenhouse operation in the U.S., right here in Arizona, adding 1000 jobs and >$500M to the state’s economy Water sustainability – working with State agencies to enhance reliability of water supply Environmental science and policy – 150 faculty from 10 colleges developing sustainable strategies with public and private sector Creating new knowledge
