FREMA : e-Learning Framework Reference Model for Assessment FREMA Workshop Hugh Davis David Millard Yvonne Howard Learning Technologies University of Southampton, UK

Introduction to the Workshop Purpose: our objectives for today Structure of hands on activities Equipment, networking Instructions Handouts Data Collection Presentation by Dave Millard Debriefing and Discussion

Objectives For you to use the beta FREMA reference model For us to get some feedback The first part of the Reference Model we have produced is a dynamic web site that describes resources in the e-learning assessment domain Questions for today: –What do you think of the ref model so far? –Would it be useful for your work? –Could your work be represented in the model?

Agenda 13:30 Introduction 14:00 Hands on session 15:00 Break 15:30 FREMA: modelling the assessment domain; where we are and direction for the future 15:50 Debrief 16:00 Discussion 16:30 Prizes and Close

Hands on Activities Role play in scenarios –Why are we doing it this way? –We have chosen three typical user roles as personas Early adopter Developer Planner –Each persona has a scenario that is typical of their activities We will ask each of you to take on a persona closest to your own and ask you to enact their scenario –Locating resources on the web site

Scenarios Will, Technical Developer –Scenario ‘I want to lookup use cases and scenarios to help me design my application. This will help me to define my footprint in the assessment domain. I see there are some web services I could re-use but some are missing. What standards can I use when writing my own web services to ensure that I can interoperate with the web services I’ve chosen?’ Yvonne, Institutional Resource Planner –Scenario ‘I want an overview of what this domain is all about. I want to know what standards are applicable in the domain to ensure that we comply with quality assurance requirements. I want to examine use cases and scenarios to understand the available footprints. I also want to know who the key players are and what the key projects are.’ Gary, Lecturer, Teacher, Trainer –Scenario ‘I’m really into all this e-assessment stuff. I particularly want to try out some innovative blended learning and I want to encourage my students to think about how they’re learning. But I haven’t the time to take on all the extra overhead! The monolithic systems that are out there don’t quite fit what I want. I’m technically quite proficient - surely I could put something together myself? Are there any web services I could reuse, or small applications I could fit together? How can I be sure that these things will interoperate and use a wide range of data sources, I don’t want to write all the new material from scratch!

Equipment and Networking We need you to have access to a computer –Own laptops where possible –Some loan equipment available Networking –If you haven’t already you need to register for the conference wireless network

Registering 1.Connect to eccnet 2.Launch a browser 3.You will need an access key provided by the conference centre

Activities, Data Collection and feedback Activities: –Role and scenario to enact and questionnaire to record your experience Data Collection: –Paper – your completed questionnaires –Electronic - We will record a trail of your activity, (by anonymous keyword only, we will not record any names or id’s) Feedback: –Debriefing We will give a first cut analysis of your questionnaire responses –Discussion Tell us your evaluation of using the reference model so far –The evaluation will inform the next iteration of the FREMA model

Thank you! We are grateful for your time helping us to evaluate our approach and provide us with feedback to improve the FREMA model www.frema.ecs.soton.ac.uk Start when you’re ready…
