Community Based Learning: Service Learning and Community Outreach New Faculty Overview

From Notre Dame’s Mission Statement: “...The University seeks to cultivate in its students not only an appreciation for the great achievement of human beings but also a disciplined sensibility to the poverty, injustice and oppression that burden the lives of so many. The aim is to create a sense of human solidarity and concern for the common good that will bear fruit as learning becomes service to justice.”

Service- or Community-Based Learning: “A form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning” (Jacoby, 1996). “A pedagogy that allows students to develop academic and professional skills in the context of meaningful, applied work with community organizations.” (Kasworm, 1997)

Best practices in community-based learning (CBL) (Eyler and Giles, 1999) Application has been shown to be the strongest predictor of learning outcomes. Well-designed service-learning provides opportunities for students to engage with faculty which is associated with most of the positive outcomes of the university experience. Community voice is a predictor of personal development and learning outcomes; collaboration is essential. Opportunities for reflection are critical; students must be provided with the opportunity to consider their work in context. Quality of site placement is significantly correlated with student learning

What are the steps required to successfully implement applied projects? What are some of the challenges with implementation? General challenges, and those unique to undergraduate and MBA courses? What are the benefits from incorporating community-based learning? What makes it worth the investment of time? What are specific benefits to you as MCOB faculty?
