Life Abounds http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/projects/astrobiology/astroventure/index.html

UNIT OBJECTIVES You will be able to distinguish between biotic and abiotic factors in the environment and the importance of each. You will be able to recognize the basic necessities required for life. You will be able to explain the ideas surrounding energy flow in ecosystems, food webs, and to understand the basic ideas of photosynthesis

TODAY!!! So, by the end of today, you will be able to distinguish the defining characteristics of ALL living organisms. You will be able to distinguish the biotic factors vs. the abiotic factors that affect ecological communities directly or indirectly

ACTIVITY!!!

Life Abounds Characteristics of Living Organisms http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/projects/astrobiology/astroventure/index.html

Lesson 1—Characteristics of living organisms 1.Living organisms are made up of cells http://biology.about.com/od/cellanatomy/a/eukaryprokarycells.htm http://biology.about.com/od/cellbiology/ss/animal_cells.htm http://biology.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.ultranet.com/ %7Ejkimball/BiologyPages/P/PlantCell.html

Lesson 1—Characteristics of living organisms 2.Living organisms obtain and use energy 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light → C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 clipart

Lesson 1—Characteristics of living organisms 3. Living organisms grow and develop http://biology.about.com/od/mitosis/ig/Mitosis-Image-Gallery/Metaphase.htm

Lesson 1—Characteristics of living organisms 4. Living organisms have offspring clipart

Lesson 1—Characteristics of living organisms 5. Living organisms respond and adapt to their environment **Give me examples of how an organism adapts to its environment** 6. Living organisms respire (breathe)

Homework Chose any plant or animal that you sketched today. Describe how each of the Characteristics of Plants or Animals fits in with your choice of that plant or animal. For example, plant cells or animal cells. How does it respire? How does it respond to its environment or how has it adapted for the environment it is in. Please give details on each of the characteristics. You should have at least one page of information. You may list each of the characteristics and use bullets under each heading or you may write it in full text form. – This will be collected and graded. Grade will be a check if completed and 10 points towards homework grade. Not complete will result in 0 points towards homework grade.
