COMPACT MOBILE LIFTING DEVICE Team 3 Michael Shaffer, Ken Kammerer, Dave Geesaman, Jin Ko Customer: FraunhoferAdvisor: Dr. Michael Keefe Mission: To design and build a compact lifting device which will aid a user in moving heavy parts into manufacturing equipment by May 1999. Approach: We will use the engineering method to obtain a conceptual design based upon the wants and constraints of the customers. From this we will construct and test a prototype in order to obtain our final product.

Background The FRC-DE is focused on manufacturing companies of metal products and provides technology development and deployment of near-net-shape manufacturing technologies, rapid prototyping, process simulation, and lightweight construction as well as polymer process and bonding technologies. New Castle Design Associates

Problem Fraunhofer utilizes three different machines: a hot press, injection molding machine, and a vacuum oven. The molds and materials used in these machines are of significant weight and thus are difficult to maneuver without mechanical assistance. An effective solution will provide a faster, safer, more versatile, and simpler approach to loading and unloading of the machines.

New Castle Design Associates MISSION To design and build a compact lifting device which will aid a user in moving heavy parts into manufacturing equipment by May 1999.

New Castle Design Associates CUSTOMERS People: James Adkins, Michelle, Bernie, Brandon –Potential users of the device Engineering Corporations: Wesco, Arburg, Centorr Vacuum Industries, Thermal Tech Inc. –Possible manufacturers of the device Administration: OSHA, James Adkins –Oversee usage of device Management: Dr. Keefe –Provides project advisement

New Castle Design Associates WANTS One unit to be versatile enough to be used for all three molding machines. Reduce time necessary to move objects Minimize cost of manufacture and maintenance Reduce risk of injury Small footprint for easy storage

New Castle Design Associates CONSTRAINTS Unit must operate with all equipment Unit must be easily and safely maneuvered Unit must lift heavy molds and parts in an efficient manner Unit must withstand daily use in a commercial situation Unit must operate within rooms, hallways, and doorways
